On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, news broke that there was a scene outside of the federal court building in Philadelphia. The event took place on the 700 block of Arch Street at about 9:00am this morning. In a press conference that took place not too long after the incident, the Federal Bureau of Investigation informed the public that a man was armed with a knife at the U.S. Federal Court Building when he was shot and stopped by a security officer, according to Robert Clark with the United States Marshal’s Service.

The man was believed to being his 40s, and he had first parked his vehicle illegally on the west side of the James A. Byrne United States Courthouse in a reserved parking spot. The man was armed with “sharp-edged weapons”, but the FBI did not specify further. The security officer verbally tried to stop the man, but he refused and continued to charge towards the building. The security officer fired multiple shots, and medics quickly arrived on scene to transport the suspect to the hospital where he remains in critical condition. He was shot twice in the back and twice in the arm.
