His attorney, Steven Romines, described the incident as a “miscommunication,” emphasizing that Scheffler acted under the impression that he had the necessary credentials and permission to enter. Romines also pointed out that the officer who tried to stop Scheffler was not part of the regular event-traffic detail, adding to the confusion.
“They are allowed to go through, that’s why they have the credential and the wave-through,” Romines explained. “He was unaware there had been a wreck, and he proceeded like they’d been instructed to. He did exactly as he was instructed to enter the premises.”
During a press conference, Scheffler expressed his sympathies to the family affected by the accident and described the situation as chaotic and a big misunderstanding. He reiterated his apologies and explained that he was unaware of the accident’s fatal nature at the time.
