This scrutiny comes against a backdrop of Brazil’s strict approach to social media regulation. Last year, platform X (formerly Twitter) faced a month-long suspension for failing to comply with court orders, including content moderation mandates. 

Although Elon Musk negotiated a settlement, questions remain about the country’s stance on online criticism of the government.

Zuckerberg highlighted the growing challenges for tech companies in Europe, stating, “Europe has an ever-increasing number of laws institutionalizing censorship and making it difficult to build anything innovative there.”

The request from Brazilian prosecutors underscores ongoing tensions between social media platforms and governments navigating the fine lines between free expression, propaganda and misinformation control.
