Brazilian prosecutors have ordered Meta to clarify whether the company’s recent changes to its U.S. fact-checking program will extend to Brazil.

The order comes amid the high court in Brazil’s concern over how the changes could impact efforts to combat “misinformation”. The South American country has maintained some of the tightest control over social media content and does not allow any criticism of the current government in power.

Meta recently announced it is suspending its fact-checking program in favor of a model similar to X’s Community Notes, emphasizing user-driven content moderation.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained the decision in a video and a blog post titled “More Speech and Fewer Mistakes”, stating, “We’ve built a lot of complex systems to moderate content, but the problem with complex systems is they make mistakes… Even if they accidentally censor one percent of posts, that’s millions of people.”

Prosecutors gave Meta 30 days to respond, as outlined in a document obtained by Reuters. They noted the request is tied to an ongoing investigation into how social media platforms address misinformation and violence in Brazil.
