A California Earthquake with a magnitude measured at 5.6 struck Northern California on the morning of June 24. It sent tremors across the Bay Area, prompting emergency officials to assess potential damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at approximately 8:10 a.m. Pacific Time near Redwood Valley in Mendocino County, about 125 miles north of San Francisco.

While no immediate reports of injuries or significant structural damage were available, the shaking was widely felt throughout the region.

The earthquake originated about 8.1 miles beneath the Earth's surface. A smaller magnitude 2.5 aftershock followed shortly afterward in the same area. Officials also confirmed that no tsunami threat was expected.

What Is an Earthquake?

An earthquake is the sudden shaking of the Earth's surface caused by the release of energy when rocks deep underground break or slip along geological faults.

The Earth's outer crust is divided into massive tectonic plates that are constantly moving. When stress builds up where these plates meet, it is eventually released as seismic waves, producing an earthquake.

Scientists measure an earthquake's magnitude using instruments called seismographs. The magnitude reflects the amount of energy released during the event, while intensity describes how strongly the shaking is felt in different locations.

Thousands of earthquakes occur around the world every day, although most are too small for people to notice.

Long History of the California Earthquake

California experiences more earthquakes than any other state in the continental United States because it sits along the boundary of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. Much of the state's seismic activity is associated with the famous San Andreas Fault system, along with numerous smaller faults that crisscross California.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that California experiences thousands of measurable earthquakes each year, though only a small percentage are large enough to cause damage.

Some of the state's most devastating earthquakes include the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which destroyed much of the city and sparked widespread fires, and the 1994 Northridge earthquake in Southern California, which killed dozens of people and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Because of this ongoing seismic activity, California has some of the nation's strictest earthquake-resistant building codes designed to reduce injuries and property damage during major quakes.

At least this week's California earthquake appears to have caused very little damage or injuries.

Officials Monitoring the California Earthquake Situation

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office announced that the governor had been briefed shortly after Wednesday's earthquake.

In a statement posted on social media, the Governor's Office said it was coordinating closely with emergency management officials to evaluate any impacts on communities and infrastructure.

As of mid-morning, authorities had not reported any major damage, road closures, or injuries related to the earthquake.

Residents were encouraged to remain alert for additional aftershocks, which commonly follow moderate and strong earthquakes.

Understanding Magnitudes

Earthquakes vary greatly in strength, and even relatively small differences in magnitude represent significant increases in released energy.

According to Michigan Technological University:

  • Below 2.5: Generally, not felt by people.
  • 2.5 to 5.4: Usually causes little or no damage, though shaking may be noticeable.
  • 5.5 to 6.0: Can produce slight damage to buildings and other structures.
  • 6.1 to 6.9: Capable of causing significant structural damage, especially near the epicenter.
  • 7.0 to 7.9: Considered major earthquakes that can produce widespread destruction.
  • 8.0 and greater: Extremely powerful events capable of devastating entire communities.

Wednesday's magnitude 5.6 earthquake falls into the range where localized structural damage is possible, although the extent depends on factors such as depth, ground composition, and building construction.
