Charlie Kirk Death

Singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth is speaking out after her Instagram comment about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk sparked controversy among fans and the LGBTQ+ community. The Tony Award–winning performer described her reaction as a “human moment” but acknowledged the backlash it created.

Chenoweth’s Viral Comment

After the Sept. 10 assassination of Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, Chenoweth commented on Instagram:

“I'm. So. Upset. Didn't always agree but appreciated some perspectives. What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still.”

The remark quickly went viral and drew sharp criticism from some of her fan base, particularly among LGBTQ+ supporters, who pointed out Kirk’s opposition to same-sex marriage and transgender rights.

Responding to Criticism

In an interview with Spectrum News/NY1, Chenoweth addressed the controversy. Theater correspondent Frank DiLella noted her comment received “mixed reactions,” to which Chenoweth replied, Mixed? You’re being kind.”

When asked about her LGBTQ+ fan base, Chenoweth grew emotional, saying:

“I saw what happened online with my own eyes, and I had a human moment of reflection right then. I came to understand that my comment hurt some folks, and that hurt me so badly. I would never. It’s no secret that I’m a Christian, that I’m a person of faith. It’s also no secret that I am an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, and for some, that doesn’t go together. But for me, it always has and it always will.”

Chenoweth also received pushback for another comment in response to actress Selma Blair, who had praised Kirk. Blair wrote, This incredible man. Who would go into the cauldron of indoctrination? And use logic to have dialogue. I am sick for his family. For all of us.” Chenoweth replied, “What you said, Selma.”

Jamie Lee Curtis and other well-known Democrats have also made similar statements.

The actress got emotional while discussing Kirk's death and explained why she feels society is experiencing and feeling a "lack of humanity."

"I mean, I disagreed with him on almost every point I ever heard him say," said Curtis, who began to cry. "But I believe he was a man of faith, and I hope in that moment when he died, that he felt connected to his faith. Even though I find what his ideas were abhorrent to me, I still believe he’s a father and a husband and a man of faith, and I hope whatever ‘connection to God’ means, that he felt it."

Utah Murder Suspect Accused of Killing Charlie Kirk Faces Arraignment Tuesday Afternoon As He Awaits His Fate in Solitary Confinement - USA Herald

The Assassination of Charlie Kirk

Charlie Kirk, known for his viral “Prove Me Wrong” series and conservative commentary, was killed during an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. He was speaking at the first stop of his “American Comeback” tour when shots rang out.

Videos shared on social media show Kirk being struck in the neck as students fled from the sound of gunfire. Police later identified the suspected shooter as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who was arrested in Washington, Utah, and charged with aggravated murder (USA Herald report).

Charlie Kirk Upcoming Memorial

Kirk’s death at just 31 years old has drawn reactions nationwide. His memorial, “Building a Legacy: Remembering Charlie Kirk,” will be held on Sept. 21 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the home of the Arizona Cardinals football team.

The event, with a capacity of over 60,000, will be livestreamed for those unable to attend (how to watch details).

Kirk is survived by his wife, former Miss Arizona USA Erika Frantzve, and their two children.

Balancing Faith and Advocacy

Chenoweth’s reflections highlight the tension between her faith and her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. Despite criticism, she emphasized that her values of compassion and inclusivity remain intact.

“I came to understand that my comment hurt some folks and that hurt me so badly,” she said. “But for me, my faith and my advocacy always go together, and they always will.”

As the nation prepares to memorialize Charlie Kirk, Chenoweth’s remarks underscore how public figures continue to navigate grief, faith, and political division in America.
