DEVELOPING: Massive China Supercomputer Breach Alleged As Hacker Markets 10 Petabytes of Defense Data In Potential Historic Cyber Heist

{By Samuel A. Lopez | USA Herald} - A shadowy cyber actor is now at the center of what could become one of the most consequential data breaches in modern history, after allegedly infiltrating a Chinese state-run supercomputing system and extracting an enormous cache of sensitive national security data—reportedly exceeding 10 petabytes.

The breach is believed to involve the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, a critical infrastructure hub that supports more than 6,000 institutional users across China, including entities tied to advanced scientific research and defense development. If confirmed, the scale and sensitivity of the alleged leak would place it among the largest intelligence compromises ever attributed to China.

According to multiple cybersecurity experts who reviewed portions of the leaked material, the unidentified actor—or group operating under the name “FlamingChina”—appears to have accessed the system with alarming ease and quietly exfiltrated data over a prolonged period without detection. The breach reportedly went unnoticed for months.

The alleged hacker surfaced publicly on Telegram on February 6, posting samples of the dataset and claiming it includes research spanning aerospace engineering, military systems, bioinformatics, and fusion simulations. The group further asserts that the data is connected to major Chinese institutions, including the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, and the National University of Defense Technology.

Cybersecurity professionals who have examined the materials describe them as consistent with high-level outputs generated by national supercomputing environments. Some files reportedly bear “secret” classification markings in Chinese and include technical schematics, advanced simulations, and visual renderings of weapons systems, including missile platforms and explosive devices.

“They’re exactly what I would expect to see from the supercomputing center,” said Dakota Cary, a China-focused consultant at SentinelOne who reviewed the leaked samples. “You would use supercomputer centers for large computational tasks. The swath of samples that the sellers put out kind of really speaks to the breadth of customers that this supercomputing center had.”

According to experts familiar with the alleged offering, the group is currently selling limited previews of the dataset for thousands of dollars, with full access priced in the hundreds of thousands. Transactions are reportedly being conducted באמצעות cryptocurrency, a common method used in illicit cyber marketplaces to obscure identity and financial tracking.

USA Herald has not independently verified the origin or full scope of the alleged dataset. However, multiple experts who reviewed portions of the data indicated that its structure, technical complexity, and classification markings are consistent with legitimate outputs from high-performance computing systems tied to national research and defense.

The National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, established in 2009 as China’s first major supercomputing hub, plays a central role in the country’s technological ecosystem. It is one of several such facilities distributed across key urban centers including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu—forming a backbone for China’s ambitions in artificial intelligence, aerospace innovation, and military advancement.

At this stage, the incident remains a developing story, with verification efforts ongoing and no official confirmation from Chinese authorities regarding the alleged intrusion.
