Drone Wars: $400 FPV Drone Shatters World Record, Wrecks Russian Warship

FPV Drones

A $400 FPV Drone has rewritten the rules of naval warfare. On August 28, 2025, Ukraine used a low-cost, first-person-view drone in a covert strike that disabled a Russian Buyan-M-class missile corvette more than 350 kilometers away, deep inside Russian-controlled waters.

The stunning operation not only neutralized one of Moscow’s most dangerous warships but also forced the Russian Black Sea Fleet to retreat further east, shifting its operations away from Ukrainian waters.

A Historic Drone Strike

The targeted vessel, a Buyan-M-class corvette, was armed with eight Kalibr cruise missiles capable of striking targets over 2,500 km away. According to Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR), the drone first jammed the ship’s radar before striking its hull, causing significant damage and forcing it to withdraw.

One Ukrainian analyst emphasized the strategic blow:

“The Black Sea Fleet has suffered significant losses and is now unable to control maritime traffic or defend its base in Sevastopol.”

This was the first known FPV drone strike on a warship at such range, breaking Ukraine’s previous record of 42 km in May 2025, when a fiber-optic drone destroyed a Russian tank.

Ukraine’s evolving drone strategy has been central to its battlefield success, redefining how modern militaries think about cost, scale, and technology.

A Fleet Under Siege

Since 2022, Ukraine has destroyed or disabled roughly 30 Russian ships and submarines, nearly one-third of the Black Sea Fleet. The Buyan-M loss further accelerated Russia’s retreat. By 2024, Britain’s defense ministry already described the fleet as “functionally inactive.”

Now, the majority of Russia’s vessels operate from Novorossiysk, far from Ukrainian-controlled waters, conceding much of the western Black Sea.

A Russian naval officer was quoted by independent media saying bluntly:

“Large ships have become big targets. They’re liabilities now.”

The FPV Drone: From Hobbyist to Battlefield Weapons

FPV drones, once designed for racing and photography, are now the cornerstone of Ukraine’s unmanned arsenal. Controlled with gaming-style headsets and joysticks, these nimble craft carry explosives directly into armored vehicles, artillery, and now even warships.

The August strike demonstrated the disruptive potential of this low-cost technology. A corvette worth $215 million to replace was disabled by an aircraft costing less than an iPhone.

As one member of Ukraine’s Typhoon drone unit put it:

“People think flying a military drone is like playing Call of Duty, until they realize there’s no restart option.”

Timeline: Ukraine’s Drone Strike Milestones (2022–2025)

  • 2022 – Ukraine begins adapting hobbyist FPV drones for frontline use, targeting Russian armored vehicles and artillery.

  • October 2022 – First successful naval drone strike damages Russia’s Black Sea Fleet ships in Sevastopol harbor.

  • 2023 – FPV drones are mass-deployed across brigades; Ukraine establishes dedicated drone assault units.

  • September 2023 – Ukrainian sea drones hit and severely damage the Russian landing ship Minsk in Crimea.

  • Early 2024 – Britain’s Defense Ministry assesses the Russian Black Sea Fleet as “functionally inactive” due to repeated Ukrainian strikes.

  • May 27, 2025 – A Ukrainian brigade destroys a Russian tank using a fiber-optic FPV drone from 42 km away, setting a new record.

  • August 28, 2025 – Ukraine launches a $400 FPV drone strike over 350 km, disabling a Russian Buyan-M missile corvette armed with Kalibr cruise missiles — the longest-range drone strike in history.

The Economics of Drone Warfare

The stark financial imbalance defines this conflict:

  • Ukrainian FPV drone cost: $300–$500
  • Russian Buyan-M corvette cost: ~$215 million
  • Damage inflicted in August 2025 strike: Estimated $500 million in lost operational capability

With Ukraine planning to build 4.5 million FPV drones in 2025, the sheer scale makes it nearly impossible for Russia to defend all its assets.

Meanwhile, Russia has escalated its own drone production – launching more than 6,000 drones in July 2025 alone, fourteen times more than the previous year.

Shifting the Balance with the FPV Drone

The August attack also underscored Russia’s struggles to adapt. Traditional naval defenses, like the AK-630M2 “Duet” cannon, proved ineffective against the small, low-flying FPV drone. Reports indicate crews were left frustrated as radar systems failed to detect the incoming threat.

Some analysts now believe internal disputes have erupted inside the Russian navy as older doctrines clash with the reality of drone swarms.

Ukraine’s unmanned innovations have turned Moscow’s advantage into a liability. By forcing the Black Sea Fleet to relocate its headquarters from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk, Kyiv has effectively reversed Russia’s original strategic goals.

The Future of Drone Warfare

This war has become a testing ground for civilian-to-military drone innovation. Off-the-shelf parts, combined with Ukrainian engineering, have created tools that rival tanks and warships at a fraction of the cost.

Each new strike seems to extend the possible range and impact of drones. The August 350 km hit is more than a tactical victory. It is the signal of a future using cheap, adaptable drones which can outmaneuver billion-dollar defense systems.

As one military strategist observed:

“The battlefield has tilted. In Ukraine, we’re watching the end of traditional naval dominance in real time.”
