Elon Musk CEO of Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and The Boring Company said that he could dig a two-mile tunnel under the city of Miami in only six months. Musk — currently richest man in the world told Miami’s mayor Friday that the operation can cost as little as $30 million.

According to Mr. Suarez, the current cost is 30 times less than the $1 billion price the local transit officials set. Furthermore, The Boring Company could complete the job in six months, against the four-year plan by local transit officials.

Mayor Francis Suarez described the call with Elon Musk as a “wonderful call”. He said: “ Elon Musk is focused on trying to deliver a project that will have the maximum utility for our residents for the least amount of money. The order of magnitude in terms of savings is significant.”

On January 18th Musk said in a tweet that he wants to dig a tunnel under Miami to reduce traffic.         

“Cars & trucks stuck in traffic generate megatons of toxic gases & particulate, but boring company road tunnels under Miami would solve traffic & be an example to the world,” Musk wrote in the Tweet.

Musk added that he had already spoken to Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida.

“If Governor & Mayor want this done, we will do it.” Said Musk.

Consequently, Mayor of Miami Mr. Suarez said that he will discuss the project with the mayor of Miami-Dade country and with Mr. DeSantis. He said: “I think we have a unique opportunity to create a signature project not just for Miami, but for the world.” 

Elon Musk knows that digging a tunnel under Miami is hard

However, digging a tunnel under Miami is not an easy thing. The metropolis city is built on limestone — a kind of rock that precipitates out of water that contains dissolved calcium. The limestone is one of the reasons why the tunnel under the Port of Miami cost $700 million. On the other hand, The Miami Herald reported Friday that Musk and Suarez discussed the limestone rock and the rising sea levels.

In conclusion, the Boring Company — first launched in 2016, is close to finishing the first commercial tunnel under the Los Angeles Convention Center. The $52.5 million project will reduce traffic and help visitors travel between venues in no time. The Boring company currently has 4 projects in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Howthorne and now Miami.
