Fake Dog Photo Scam Nearly Costs Deltona Couple $2,700

A Deltona couple came dangerously close to losing $2,746 after scammers used a fake veterinary emergency and a manipulated photo of their missing dog to demand immediate payment. The emotional ploy nearly worked, exploiting fear, urgency, and the panic of a beloved pet’s disappearance.

The incident has now turned into a warning about increasingly sophisticated scams that use pressure tactics and even fake imagery to target vulnerable pet owners.

Archer the Beagle Mix Goes Missing in Deltona

The ordeal began on the evening of April 11 when 11-year-old beagle mix Archer slipped through a fence at the couple’s Deltona home and ran off. The search continued into the following day as concern grew.

Cosens’ wife posted photos of Archer on social media in hopes of finding him quickly.

Then the phone rang.

Urgent Call Claims Life or Death Surgery

The caller said he was from the Deltona animal control shelter veterinary service and delivered alarming news. Archer had been hit by a car and needed emergency surgery immediately.

The stakes were framed as critical, with devastating consequences if the couple hesitated.

"But if we act now, right now, he's got about a 65% chance of full mobility," Cosens said, recalling the conversation.

The caller insisted there was no time to visit the dog and said Archer was already on the operating table. Instead, a photo was sent showing what appeared to be the beagle preparing for surgery.

It looked convincing, but it was fake.

Fake Photo and Payment Pressure Raise Red Flags

As the conversation continued, the caller pushed for payment of $2,746, offering options including Zelle. But several details began to feel wrong.

The service allegedly could not accept in person payment, and the caller struggled to answer basic veterinary questions.

Cosens and his wife decided to slow things down and verify the information themselves.

Suspicion Turns Into Confirmation of Scam

What began as panic quickly shifted into anger and disbelief as the couple realized they were being targeted.

"Now my wife and I went from ... grieving our lost dog and just kind of moping around the house and a bit depressed to ticked off," he said.

Cosens said the turning point came when inconsistencies became impossible to ignore.

"He clearly knows exactly how to make a payment and exactly how the payment will go, but he doesn't know what joint attaches to the femur," Cosens said.

At that point, they stopped communicating and reported the incident.

Archer Returns Home, but Not Fully Recovered

With help from a neighbor, the couple continued searching. Archer was eventually found and brought back home after several days.

Law enforcement has since been notified and is investigating the scam attempt, Cosens said.

Archer’s condition upon return raised additional concern. He was exhausted, reluctant to stand to eat, and had a visible wound on his leg. A veterinarian also noted signs of dehydration.

While relieved to have him back, the family says the experience is far from over.

"I don't think we'll be fully satisfied until we see justice done," he said.

AI-Driven Scams Fuel Rising Threat Nationwide

The case reflects a broader surge in scams across the United States, increasingly powered by artificial intelligence tools that make deception more believable.

According to the FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report, cyber-assisted crimes involving artificial intelligence resulted in 22,364 complaints and nearly $893 million in losses.

The FBI warns that criminals now use advanced tactics including fake identities, cloned voices, and realistic videos to manipulate victims.

"Scammers rely on pressure techniques to defraud Americans while deploying fake social profiles, voice clones, identification documents and believable videos depicting public figures or loved ones," according to an FBI news release.

Warning Signs and Safety Advice for Pet Owners

After narrowly avoiding the scam, Cosens is urging others to be cautious when dealing with urgent requests involving pets.

"Anybody that's a vet or claiming to be a vet or anybody claiming to be helping your dog, if they're not willing to meet you face to face, then they're scamming you," he said. "You know, if they're trying to get you to hurry up and do something over the phone, it's 100% a scam."

Authorities echo that advice, encouraging the public to slow down and verify before sending money.

"The FBI urges everyone to 'Take a Beat' to identify the red flags of a potential scam," its website states. "Resist pressure to act quickly and assess the situation before turning over money or personal information."
