Livingston’s younger sister, Shannon Doughty, expressed a mix of relief and sorrow upon learning her brother’s fate.

“At least you know,” she said. “The fear of the unknown is the worst, right? So just knowing, it’s a multitude of emotions. You wanted to know but you didn’t want to know. But you needed to know.”

What Lies Ahead

The identification effort could take several more years. Investigators continue to seek DNA samples from relatives of men who disappeared between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s.

Many of these men may have been estranged from their families or marginalized due to their sexuality, complicating the search for relatives.
