It’s been a well known fact for a few years now that women make less than men. Until now, a widely accepted figure was that women make 80 cents to every dollar a man makes. However, new study shows that not only do women make less money for doing the same job, the gender pay gap is much larger than previously estimated.

The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) released a study at the end of November. It says women make only 49 cents for every dollar a man makes.

“Much ink has been spilled debating whether the commonly cited measure of the wage gap—that women earn 80 cents for every dollar earned by a man—is an exaggeration due to occupational differences or so-called ‘women’s choices,’ but our analysis finds that we have actually been underestimating the extent of pay inequality in the labor market,” said IWPR President and report co-author Heidi Hartmann, Ph.D.

The study titled, Still a Man’s Labor Market, goes over all aspects of a women’s job market, and how it is unequal to a man’s in multiple ways.
