“It would be defeated. That’s why all they want to do is talk about it. They know what the outcome would be.”
Political Motivations Behind Talks of Impeachment
All in all, Senate Republicans believe that talks of impeachment are purely politically motivated. This is largely due to rhetoric from the Democrats themselves. Since the inception of Trump’s presidency, Democrats have vowed to “resist” him. Earlier this year, newly elected congresswoman Rashida Tlaib vowed that she and her colleagues would “impeach the motherf*cker.”
Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also spoken about impeachment. Previously, Pelosi dismissed impeachment as something which is “too divisive” amongst Americans. However, this has changed. Earlier this month, the speaker of the House accused Trump of “goading” Democrats to impeach him from office. Pelosi furthermore stated that the president believes facing impeachment will solidify support amongst his base of supporters.
President Trump has repeatedly censured Democrats who openly discuss impeaching him from office.
