Jacob Baker captured in cave after 3 Hawaii killings

Hawaiʻi Island police captured 36-year-old Jacob Daniel Baker on Thursday afternoon following an intense, multi-agency manhunt tied to the brutal slayings of three elderly men in the rural Puna district. Officers discovered the shirtless suspect hiding inside a small volcanic cave in Kalapana after local residents spotted him ducking from passing traffic. The arrest brings a dramatic end to a two-day panic that left the remote community on edge.

Terror in the Puna District

The sweeping investigation began on Monday night when police discovered 69-year-old Robert Shine partially submerged in a residential cement pond. An autopsy later revealed Shine died from strangulation. The horror intensified less than 24 hours later when authorities discovered two more bodies in separate locations, signaling a potential serial killer on the loose.

A 79-year-old man was found dead on Tuesday afternoon from apparent blunt force trauma just a few hundred feet from the initial crime scene. Hours later, police conducting a welfare check discovered 69-year-old John Carse dead from sharp force trauma at a property 19 miles away. The rapid succession of violent deaths forced local law enforcement to deploy massive regional resources.

  • Victim 1: Robert Shine, 69 — Found Monday night; autopsy confirmed death by strangulation.

  • Victim 2: Unidentified Male, 79 — Found Tuesday afternoon with blunt force head injuries.

  • Victim 3: John Carse, 69 — Found Tuesday night; succumbed to sharp force trauma.

Captured in a Subterranean Hideout

By Thursday, the search expanded into a massive multi-agency operation involving the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Marshals Office, and state sheriffs. Baker, a resident of Pāhoa described by officials as "armed and extremely dangerous," attempted to evade the dragnet by retreating into the thick jungle and volcanic terrain of lower Puna.

The breakthrough came when a home surveillance system captured a man matching Baker's description hiding in a vacant lot in the Kaimu area. Witnesses reported the suspect was repeatedly crouching down to avoid being seen by passing vehicles. Law enforcement officers swarmed the coordinates, tracking Baker onto an adjacent property where he had crawled into a small cave to hide from thermal imaging and overhead drones.

Red Flags and Denied Restraining Orders

As the community processes the tragedy, court records reveal that local authorities had been warned about Baker's escalating behavior just days before the homicides took place. Two local women had filed emergency petitions for temporary restraining orders against Baker, alleging that he was terrorizing people at a nearby fruit farm.

One woman stated in her petition that Baker explicitly threatened to kill multiple women staying at the property, causing several residents to pack their bags and flee. A second petitioner claimed Baker threatened a disabled man, stole property, and declared his intent to illegally squat on the farm. A local judge ultimately denied both restraining orders, citing a lack of physical proof of harassment.

"Everyone's been really scared," Puna resident Priya Surrago told reporters following the arrest. "A lot of people around here, we just live very close in community and not even everybody even has like locks on their doors."

What Happens Next

Hawaii Island Police Chief Reed Mahuna confirmed that while investigators are confident Baker acted alone in all three homicides, a clear motive has not yet been established. Authorities have found no structural connection between the three victims aside from the geographic proximity of the first two scenes.

Baker remains in custody facing multiple counts of first-degree murder, burglary, and related felony charges. Prosecutors are expected to file formal indictments within the week, while forensic teams continue processing the distinct crime scenes spread across the island's lava fields and tropical forests.
