Jim Whittaker dies at 97

The story of Jim Whittaker dies at 97 closes like the final chapter of an epic ascent—one marked by towering peaks, quiet courage, and a legacy etched into the world’s highest summits.

A Life That Reached the Roof of the World

Jim Whittaker, the first American to stand atop Mount Everest, has died at the age of 97. His family confirmed he passed away Tuesday at his home in Port Townsend.

In a statement shared by his son, Leif Whittaker, the family described a man driven not just by altitude, but by spirit.

“Whether at home, in the mountains, or at sea, he sought to share adventure, joy, and optimism,” the statement read, portraying a life lived like a compass always pointing toward possibility.

The Climb That Changed Everything

Whittaker’s historic 1963 Everest ascent alongside Nawang Gombu came a decade after Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first conquered the peak.

That climb didn’t just plant a flag—it ignited a movement. Like a spark in dry timber, it fueled America’s fascination with mountaineering, transforming Whittaker from a reserved climber into a national figure splashed across magazine covers and lecture halls.

His achievements also extended to formidable peaks like K2, securing his place in climbing history.

From Mountain Peaks to Business Leadership

Whittaker’s journey was not confined to summits. He joined REI in 1955 as its first full-time employee, hired by co-founder Lloyd Anderson.

After his Everest triumph, REI’s popularity surged. Whittaker later served as president and CEO from 1971 to 1979, overseeing explosive growth as membership climbed from roughly 250,000 to over 900,000.

His influence extended into conservation, helping establish landmarks such as North Cascades National Park, Pasayten Wilderness, and Redwood National Park.

Friendship, Loss, and Shared Peaks

Whittaker’s fame brought him into the orbit of Robert Kennedy. The two forged a close friendship, even climbing a 14,000-foot Canadian peak later named Mount Kennedy after Kennedy’s assassination in 1968.

Whittaker was at Kennedy’s bedside when he died—a moment that left a lasting emotional scar.

Roots in Washington and a Lifetime of Climbing

Raised in Seattle, Whittaker began climbing in the 1940s with his twin brother, Lou Whittaker.

At just 16, the pair summited Mount Olympus. As they returned home, they were greeted by celebration—End of World War II had just been announced.

Lou later skipped the 1963 Everest expedition, opting instead to open a sporting goods store. Still, he occasionally stepped into the spotlight on Jim’s behalf, humorously attending events when his brother grew weary of public attention. Lou died in 2024 at age 95.

Climbing for Peace and Purpose

Whittaker continued leading expeditions long after his Everest triumph, including the 1990 Everest International Peace Climb, which united climbers from the United States, the Soviet Union, and China.

He believed mountains could bridge divides, describing shared challenges in nature as a force capable of uniting people across borders and ideologies.

One of his proudest achievements came in 1981, when he guided 10 climbers with disabilities up Mount Rainier—a feat he said meant as much to them as Everest did to him.

He climbed Rainier more than 100 times, never underestimating its shifting moods. Even a familiar peak, he warned, could humble the most experienced climber in hours.

A Legacy as Enduring as the Mountains

Former Washington Gov. Jay Inslee compared Whittaker’s legacy to Mount Rainier itself—enduring and immense.

“He pulled many a climber up the peak,” Inslee said. “He did the same for all our spirits.”

After decades spent navigating the world’s most perilous heights, Whittaker once said he hoped for a quiet end—“to die in my sleep with the television on.”

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dianne Roberts; sons Bob, Joss, and Leif; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The headline Jim Whittaker dies at 97 may mark his passing, but like footprints frozen high in the Himalayas, his legacy will remain—etched where earth meets sky.
