Matt Damon And Ben Affleck Hit With Defamation Lawsuit Over Netflix Crime Thriller ‘The Rip’

Miami-Dade narcotics detectives who pulled off the biggest cash seizure in county history are now fighting Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in federal court — and their lawsuit exposes Hollywood's dangerous habit of turning heroes into villains.

They found $22 million hidden behind a fake wall. Stashed in orange buckets. The kind of bust that defines careers, earns commendations, and goes down in law enforcement history.

Now those same officers are in a federal courtroom — not for anything they did wrong, but because Hollywood decided their story needed a villain. And apparently, they were the perfect fit.

Miami-Dade narcotics detectives Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana filed a federal defamation lawsuit Tuesday against Artists Equity — the production company founded by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck — along with co-producer Falco Pictures, over Netflix's police thriller The Rip. The complaint alleges the film lifted the officers' landmark 2016 bust almost beat for beat, then layered it with fabricated plotlines depicting the real officers as corrupt, murderous, and in bed with the cartels.

This isn't a case of mistaken identity. This is about two decorated law enforcement officers watching themselves — thinly disguised — commit crimes on a major streaming platform for the world to see.

$22 Million, Orange Buckets, and a Story Too Good to Ignore

On June 29, 2016, Smith and Santana were part of a narcotics investigation that ended with the discovery of $21,970,411 in cash, concealed inside orange buckets behind a false drywall partition in a Miami Lakes home. It remains the largest cash seizure in Miami-Dade Police Department history.

Santana led the investigation. Smith supervised it. Their work was textbook.

When The Rip dropped on Netflix — marketed as "inspired by true events" — the suit alleges the film reproduced a striking array of details: the orange buckets, the hidden wall, the magnitude of the seizure, the specific law enforcement dynamics of the operation. The recreation was specific enough that, according to the lawsuit, family members, colleagues, and prosecutors approached both officers after seeing the film or its trailer — asking which character they were and, pointedly, "how many buckets they kept."

That question alone should chill every officer who has ever put their life on the line for a conviction.

What Hollywood Added: Corruption, Murder, Cartels

The Rip stars Damon and Affleck as the lead detectives, with both serving as co-producers on the project under Artists Equity, which Affleck helms as CEO and Damon leads as Chief Creative Officer. The company launched in 2022 with backing from RedBird Capital.

The lawsuit doesn't dispute that filmmakers can take creative liberties. It draws the line at what those liberties actually included.

According to the complaint, the fictional officers — built on the foundation of Smith and Santana's real case — are depicted discussing how to steal seized money, lying to suspects, concealing evidence from supervisors, communicating directly with cartel members, being implicated in a fellow officer's murder, and ultimately killing a DEA agent.

None of that happened. None of it is true. And according to the lawsuit, the filmmakers knew it.

The Cease-and-Desist They Ignored

Smith and Santana didn't wait for the film's release to raise alarms. In December 2025, their attorneys sent a cease-and-desist letter to the production, objecting to the trailer and promotional materials that had already begun circulating.

The letter was ignored.

What followed, according to the suit, was a quiet, telling gesture: a Miami-Dade officer who had consulted on the film reached out to the plaintiffs on behalf of director Joe Carnahan, offering what the complaint describes as an apology — and dangling consulting opportunities on a future project as a kind of makeshift peace offering.

You don't reach out to apologize for something you believe was done right.

Netflix, which distributed the film, was not named as a defendant. The company did not respond to requests for comment.

The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified damages on counts of defamation, defamation by implication, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The Bigger Picture

This lawsuit is about more than two officers fighting to protect their reputations. It's about a pattern — the entertainment industry mining real law enforcement cases for prestige content, then retrofitting those stories with fictional corruption to create dramatic tension, regardless of the real human cost.

Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana did their jobs. They found the money. They built the case. They followed the law.

What they didn't sign up for was becoming the face of everything they spent their careers fighting against — beamed into millions of homes worldwide, courtesy of two of Hollywood's most powerful producers.

The federal court in Florida will decide whether that's actionable. But the moral answer is already clear.
