The Me Too movement continues to reshape the entertainment industry in France. Singer and actor Patrick Bruel, one of the country's most recognizable celebrities, has been placed under judicial investigation on multiple allegations of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and harassment.

The development marks one of the most significant cases involving a French entertainment figure since the movement gained momentum in Europe.

Bruel, 67, was taken before a panel of judges after spending two days in custody in Nanterre, a suburb west of Paris. Judges approved a prosecutor's request to place the entertainer under formal investigation, a legal procedure that allows authorities to conduct a more extensive examination of the allegations.

Me Too Investigation in France

Under French law, being placed under judicial investigation does not mean a person has been convicted of a crime. Instead, an examining magistrate reviews evidence and testimony to determine whether sufficient grounds exist for a criminal trial.

According to the French justice system, rape is defined as any non-consensual act of penetration. In many cases, a judicial investigation ultimately results in a trial, though outcomes vary depending on the evidence collected.

Bruel has consistently denied all allegations against him.

 French Star Since the 1980's

Born Patrick Benguigui in Algeria in 1959, Bruel became one of France's biggest stars during the 1980s.

His music career exploded with hits such as Marre de cette nana-là, and his popularity sparked what French media once referred to as "Bruelmania."

In addition to his successful music career, Bruel has appeared in more than 30 films and remained active in theater productions. Until recently, he was performing on stage in Paris.

Me Too Allegations Continue to Mount

The latest investigation follows years of accusations against the singer.

In May, investigative publication Mediapart reported that approximately 30 women had shared similar accounts alleging harassment or sexual assault involving Bruel. Many of the allegations reportedly stem from encounters at filming locations, backstage areas, and music venues.

Flavie Flament Speaks Out

The accusations gained additional attention when television and radio presenter Flavie Flament publicly alleged that Bruel drugged and raped her in 1991 when she was 16 years old.

While Flament's allegation is not among the nine cases currently cited by investigators because of legal time limitations, prosecutors have reportedly requested that her complaint and a dozen other older allegations be re-examined.

ME Too Growing Pressure on French Institutions

The case arrives during a period of heightened scrutiny regarding how French authorities handle sexual violence allegations.

Advocates for victims' rights have pointed to recent high-profile cases as evidence that stronger accountability measures are needed. Feminist organizations reportedly welcomed the decision to proceed with a judicial investigation.

The controversy also comes amid public outrage over the murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna, whose suspected killer had reportedly been the subject of previous abuse complaints.

The case sparked renewed debate about how authorities respond to warning signs and allegations of abuse.

Comparisons to Gérard Depardieu

Bruel's case has inevitably drawn comparisons to that of acclaimed actor Gérard Depardieu, who was convicted last year of sexual assault involving incidents on a film set. Depardieu received a suspended sentence and has appealed the ruling.

Together, the cases have intensified discussions about celebrity influence, accountability, and the impact of the Me Too movement on French society.

Bruel Maintains His Innocence

Throughout the controversy, Bruel has denied wrongdoing.

According to French media reports, he recently told associates that while he may have occasionally been "heavy-handed," he always respected rejection.

In a statement posted on Instagram, the singer said he had never forced himself on a woman and denied ever drugging, manipulating, or exploiting anyone.

He also rejected claims that he used his celebrity status to obtain non-consensual relationships.

As the judicial investigation proceeds, magistrates will review evidence and testimony before determining whether the allegations should proceed to trial.
