The decision by the country’s highest court received considerable praise from the Group for Chosen Reproduction (GIRE), which declared no one seeking abortion will undergo punishment as a result.
However, despite the action at the federal level, there are still nearly two dozen states across Mexico with abortion restrictions in place. More legal action is therefore anticipated in these communities to further increase access to abortion.
More changes coming soon to Mexico
As Mexico makes changes to its federal abortion regulations, the country also seems to be on the verge of soon electing its first female president.
At this time, Claudia Sheinbaum, the previous Mexico City mayor, will square off against National Action Party member Xóchitl Gálvez in Mexico’s 2024 presidential election.
Whichever woman ends up winning next year’s race will have serious issues to contend with. These will include not just changes to the country’s federal abortion laws, but also the infamous cartels, crime rates, and the southern border Mexico shares with the United States.
