In a letter to employees, MGM Chief Executive Bill Hornbuckle said, “While the immediate future remains uncertain, I truly believe that the challenges we face today are not permanent,” further adding, “The fundamentals of our industry, our company and our communities will not change. Concerts, sports and awe-inspiring entertainment remain on our horizon.”
Per Hornbuckle, the layoffs are necessary since the company was unable to bring back furloughed employees after six months. Whenever the economy bounces back, the 18,000 workers were assured that they would be rehired.
On June 4, Nevada’s casinos were officially reopened under new guidelines — 50% occupancy as well as social distancing.
MGM has 13 resorts in its portfolio, both the Park MGM and NoMad still remain closed while the MGM Mirage is set to reopen this week.
