Walz at first acknowledged his role in overseeing agencies that failed to prevent the fraud. But he also made statements that effectively there was no fraud but racism against the Somalis.

In response, his administration halted certain payments, ordered an external audit of Medicaid billing practices, and pledged tighter oversight. However, critics argue the measures were too little... too late.
