The drama began on Dec. 31 when the organization put out a call for cryptocurrency donations via the BitPay platform.
The post about the nonprofit saw massive criticism from community members including the company’s co-founder Zawinski. Although Zawinski hasn’t been involved with Mozilla for two decades, the co-founder criticized the move saying that “Everyone involved in the project should be witheringly ashamed of this decision to partner with planet-incinerating Ponzi grifters.”
Zawinski published on his blog about the crypto industry arguing that the technology has an unrealistic business model. He added that the crypto industry turns pollution into money.
Meanwhile, some community members asked Mozilla to delete the call for donations via cryptos.
Twitter user Mcbyrne said, “Bitcoin is bad for [the] climate,” while Seglegs questioned why Mozilla was an “enabling environmental catastrophe” by supporting crypto.
