Just under five in ten teenagers have acknowledged they consume drugs and alcohol so they’ll have an easier time falling asleep or enjoying themselves during their waking hours.

As you can imagine, none of this bodes well for young people. In fact, it’s a serious problem that demands real solutions. Teens who ingest drugs and alcohol remain at greater risk of developing addictions, stunting their brain growth, and fatally overdosing.

Over the years, growing numbers of studies have shown children and teens becoming more prone to stress and other mental health issues, hence putting them at greater risk of drug and alcohol abuse.

What can parents do?

Now more than ever, it’s vital for parents to maintain healthy relationships with their kids, nurture their mental health, and keep them away from drugs and alcohol. Having open dialogues with teens about their lives, friendships, and experiences in school can make a positive difference.

Likewise, parents should be mindful of their children’s online activity. In 2024, it’s never been easier for predators to contact teens via the internet and begin influencing their behavior.
