A new Donald Trump cover for TIME Magazine’s November 10 issue has sparked widespread attention — and controversy. The updated edition was released after former President Donald Trump harshly criticized the original image selected by the publication.

Trump, who has appeared on over 40 TIME covers — trailing only Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon — has had a decades-long relationship with the magazine.

Trump’s Reaction: “Worst of All Time”

Shortly after the original cover debuted, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to blast the image choice:

“TIME Magazine wrote a relatively good story about me, but the picture may be the Worst of All Time. They ‘disappeared’ my hair, and then had something floating on top of my head that looked like a floating crown, but an extremely small one. Really weird!”

The initial cover captioned “His Triumph,” featured Trump gazing upward against a blue sky. The newly released version — “Trump’s World” — depicts him seated at the Hayes desk, hands clasped beneath his chin, exuding a more contemplative posture.

Despite speculation, TIME has not confirmed whether Trump’s complaints prompted the redesign.

A Long Relationship with TIME

Trump’s long association with TIME dates back decades. The publication named him Person of the Year twice — in 2016 and again in 2024 — cementing his place as one of the most frequently featured U.S. presidents in the magazine’s history.

However, not all of Trump’s covers have been authentic. According to The Washington Post, fake TIME covers adorned the walls of at least five of his golf clubs, displaying a headline declaring that “Trump is hitting it on all fronts … even TV!” The revelation led the magazine to request their removal.

Today, genuine TIME covers featuring Trump hang prominently at Mar-a-Lago, reflecting both pride and controversy in his long-running media narrative.

The Photographer and Controversy Over Inspiration

The updated cover photo was captured by Washington, D.C.-based photographer Stephen Voss, whose composition drew social media speculation for resembling a famous 1963 portrait by Arnold Newman of German industrialist Alfried Krupp.

The Daily Beast reported that Voss had “liked” social media comments referencing the resemblance, though the likes were later removed. In response, a TIME spokesperson dismissed the comparisons entirely:

“There is no connection and claims suggesting otherwise are completely untrue,” the spokesperson stated. “The references for this photoshoot were past presidential portraits in the Oval Office, including TIME’s own covers.”

TIME’s Ownership and Political Overtones

Before the original cover’s release, TIME owner and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff made headlines with remarks to The New York Times, stating he believed Trump was doing a “great job” and supported deploying federal troops in San Francisco. These comments fueled additional political debate over the publication’s neutrality amid the controversy surrounding the cover.
