For years, the public has been aware of health hazards associated with high fructose corn syrup and other natural sugars. In moderation, they’re usually fine; although too much can leave people vulnerable to problems like weight gain, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.
Artificial sweeteners subsequently emerged as an alternative for folks who like the taste of sugar, yet prefer to avoid health issues. While formally recognized as a substitute for sugar, some artificial sweeteners have been heralded for repressing individual appetite and hunger.
Unfortunately, despite the fanfare, a new study out of Shanghai ties artificial sweetener consumption to heartbeat irregularities.
A not-so-safe alternative to sugar?
According to Chinese researchers, people who ingest even two liters of artificial sweeteners or diet sodas within one day have a 20% higher probability of atrial fibrillation. This condition happens when the heart begins beating in a way that medical professionals deem as dangerously irregular.
