The presidential campaign of former UN ambassador Nikki Haley continues to make headlines and garner support. Not long after an endorsement from Americans For Prosperity, Haley also secured the backing of New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu.

The Republican governor believes Haley is best positioned to win and has the necessary energy to get this nation back on the right track. With the New Hampshire primaries set to play a major role in which GOP candidate wins the party's nomination, Sununu's endorsement is a big deal.

Recently, he and Haley sat down with CNN host Dana Bash for a joint interview.

More on Sununu's backing of Haley

The New Hampshire governor said despite his spending time with other Republicans running for president, Haley uniquely connects with the electorate. Sununu told CNN that while Haley has policy and background working in her favor, her ability to earn the trust of voters really matters as well.

Touting the governor's endorsement as "amazing," the former UN ambassador brushed off criticism from rival DeSantis that she's an "establishment candidate." When Bash directly asked for her response to that claim, Haley pointed to her record as a Tea Party contender when she became South Carolina's governor.

As the interview progressed, Sununu faced questioning about Haley lagging behind Trump in Granite State polls and what his own plans are to change this. The New Hampshire governor responded by affirming he and Haley will move ahead with a "40-day ground game" to benefit her campaign.

Sununu also noted that America needs a president who can fully devote their energy to issues like inflation, the war in Israel, etc. It is not the New Hampshire governor's view that Trump will be able to do this.

A different approach

During Haley and Sununu's joint interview, they repeatedly faced questions about Trump's candidacy and ways to appeal to the GOP base in ways meaningful enough to win.

Both Republicans stressed the importance of Americans not just pivoting away from Trump's policy failures, but also his praise of dictators. Haley later stated she doesn't believe it's in the country's best interests to have "two 80-year-olds" running in the general election next year.

In the weeks ahead, voters can look forward to seeing both Sununu and Haley on the campaign trails in New Hampshire. The state's primary will take place on Tuesday, January 23.
