It’s a no-brainer that social media is tearing apart the social fabric. We aren’t connected, in fact, we are disconnected from the real world, and stuck in the social media feed; fighting to get that one additional dopamine dose from likes and comments. Now imagine a social virtual world where you can do meetings, meet friends (or not) and escape from the reality … instead of facing it. According to Zuckerberg, it will be “an embodied internet, where instead of just viewing content — you are in it.”
It seems apparent that Facebook normalized “technology slavery” as I like to put it. People don’t care anymore about whether the people behind Facebook or Meta try to make them addicted. Everyone seems to be happy about the situation – as long as they are getting likes and comments from people.
Metaverse as I see it will be a new drug. It will be an even more harmful technology that is useless. What we actually need is to be connected again; to have social media platforms that allow us to connect, but not to be addicted.
