In an interview with the Wichita Eagle, Mayor Mayfield expressed his frustration with the situation, lamenting, “I mean, everybody’s looking at Marion like we’re a bunch of hicks now, and the police department just did what the judge allowed them to do.”

Chief Cody, in an August Facebook post, staunchly defended the raid, claiming that when the full story emerges, the judicial system that had come under scrutiny would be vindicated.

The raid had a devastating impact on the Meyer family. Footage released by the Marion County Record showed Joan Meyer, the 90-year-old mother of Eric Meyer, shouting at officers as they searched her home. She passed away the next day. Her son believes that the stress induced by the raid contributed to her untimely death. And he intends to file a lawsuit in connection with the incident.

Warrant withdrawn

Kari Newell a local restaurant owner accused the Marion County Record of illegally obtaining and leaking information about a drunk-driving incident.

Court documents revealed that Chief Cody alleged that a reporter from the paper had either impersonated the victim or lied about the reasons for seeking the records.
