Scientists Predicted November, Friday the 13th 2026 as ‘Doomsday’ but the Real Warning Was Hidden in the Math

What the 1960 ‘Doomsday’ Prediction Actually Means

  • The November 13, 2026 date is real, but the scientists never established that the world would literally end that day.
  • Their mathematical model projected human population toward infinity only if centuries of accelerating population growth continued unchanged.
  • That condition failed decades ago, and modern demographic projections now point toward slowing growth and an eventual global population peak.

Friday, November 13, 2026, has one of the strangest scientific backstories of any date on the calendar.

Sixty-six years ago, Science published a paper by Heinz von Foerster, Patricia M. Mora and Lawrence W. Amiot titled Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026. The subtitle contained the part that often disappears from modern retellings — human population would approach infinity “if it grows as it has grown in the last two millennia.”

That “if” changes everything.

At the time, the researchers examined historical population estimates and concluded that humanity appeared to be growing faster than an ordinary exponential curve. Their model produced something called hyperbolic growth — the larger the population became, the faster the rate of increase accelerated.

Extend that curve far enough and mathematics produces a singularity, a point where the equation shoots toward infinity.

Their date was November 13, 2026.

Of course, an infinite number of humans cannot physically occupy Earth. And von Foerster apparently never believed that would happen. TIME, reporting on the study only days after its publication in 1960, explained that he was using the extraordinary result to demonstrate what happens when an accelerating trend is extended indefinitely.

In other words, this was less a prophecy than a mathematical alarm bell.

And something important happened afterward.

Humanity changed the curve.

Birth rates declined across much of the world, families became smaller, contraception expanded, societies urbanized and population growth began slowing. The United Nations says humanity reached 8 billion in November 2022. It now expects the world to reach roughly 9 billion around 2037 — not infinity in 2026.

The UN's latest major population projections go even further. Instead of endless acceleration, the world population is currently projected to peak at roughly 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, then decline slightly toward the end of the century.

So, should anyone be worried about November 13?

Not because of this prediction.

There is no known scientific mechanism scheduled to activate on Friday the 13th, no astronomical event embedded in the equation and no evidence that humanity faces extinction because the calendar reaches von Foerster's mathematical date.

But dismissing the paper as simply wrong misses what made it interesting.

A 2026 analysis revisiting the work argues that the strange singularity can instead be viewed as evidence that the old demographic system was approaching a major change. The centuries-long pattern of hyperbolic acceleration eventually gave way to demographic slowdown — exactly the kind of break that has to occur before an impossible mathematical infinity is reached. CDL Repositories

That may be the lasting lesson of the 1960 prediction.

Models can accurately describe the past and still produce absurd results when their assumptions are projected too far into the future. Sometimes the extraordinary prediction is not telling us what will happen. It is telling us that the trend itself cannot continue.

November 13, 2026, will therefore mark something real — not the end of humanity, but the arrival of a date that scientists mathematically calculated more than six decades ago, forcing us to look back at how dramatically the human population story changed before their equation ever reached zero.
