Search For Nancy Guthrie Hits Devastating Three-Month Mark As Today Co-Host Savannah Guthrie’s 84-Year-Old Mother Remains Missing And FBI Hunt For Masked Tucson Kidnapper Goes Cold

TUCSON, ARIZONA — Three months to the day after a masked intruder kidnapped 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie from her home in the Catalina Foothills, the mother of NBC "Today" co-anchor Savannah Guthrie has not been found, the FBI has not made a single arrest, and a family that once thought it would have answers within days is now staring down the possibility of a disappearance that may never be solved.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department, which leads the investigation alongside the FBI's Phoenix Field Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and a rotating team of search-and-rescue volunteers, confirmed Sunday that the case remains open and active but that investigators have no new leads they are willing to discuss publicly.

From Doorbell Footage To A Cold Trail

Nancy Guthrie was last seen alive on the evening of February 1, 2026. According to court filings unsealed in March, doorbell footage from her front porch captured a male intruder — about 5-foot-9 with an average build, wearing a black ski mask and carrying a 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack — approaching her front door, tampering with the camera, and disappearing inside.

Sheriff's deputies arrived the next morning after a friend of Guthrie's called in a welfare check. They found drops of her blood on the porch, an unlocked back door and a kitchen table set as if she had been preparing dinner. There were no signs of forced entry, no signs of a struggle inside the house, and no sign of Nancy.

Within 48 hours, the case had drawn the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and a wave of media attention driven by Savannah Guthrie's national profile. NBC News initially declined to confirm the connection between the missing woman and its star anchor; Savannah herself broke the news on the "Today" show on February 3, fighting through tears as she pleaded for the public's help.

The Ransom Notes That Led Nowhere

Within a week of the abduction, the Guthrie family received what investigators have described as multiple ransom notes demanding payment in cryptocurrency. Two of those deadlines passed by February 9 with no contact and no proof of life. The family privately offered $1 million through a personal reward fund on February 24, and that figure remains the largest publicly disclosed reward in any current FBI missing-person case in the Southwest.

A former FBI agent who reviewed the public details of the case told USA Herald that the ransom-note pattern is consistent with what the bureau internally calls "bad-faith abductions" — kidnappings where the perpetrator never intended to return the victim alive and the demands are designed mostly to misdirect investigators.

"You don't see that pattern in a true ransom case," the former agent said. "When someone is bargaining in good faith, they call back. They want their money. The silence after the deadline is what tells you what kind of case you actually have."

A Family In Public Mourning, A Case In Public Limbo

Savannah Guthrie returned to "Today" on April 6 after a two-month absence in which she had originally been scheduled to co-host NBC's coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics from Milan-Cortina. In her first on-air remarks since the disappearance, she described the experience as "the longest 64 days of my life" and asked viewers not to forget her mother's face.

"My mom is the kindest person you'll ever meet," Guthrie said on March 25 in a sit-down with NPR. "I imagine her terror, and I imagine her hope, and I refuse to let either one go. She is somewhere. She is someone's mother. She is mine."

The Pima County Sheriff's Department renewed its public appeal Sunday, releasing for the first time the full unredacted version of the front-porch surveillance footage and a clearer composite sketch of the suspect's backpack and footwear. Sheriff Chris Nanos asked anyone who saw a man matching that description in the Catalina Foothills, Oro Valley or Marana corridor between January 28 and February 2 to call the bureau's tip line.

Where The Investigation Stands Three Months In

Investigators have, according to filings, conducted more than 1,400 interviews, executed 11 search warrants, drained two retention ponds, and processed roughly 200 hours of doorbell and traffic-camera footage from neighborhoods within a 20-mile radius of Guthrie's home. They have ruled out, formally or informally, every member of the immediate family.

What they have not done, three months in, is identify a single suspect by name, recover any biological evidence beyond the porch bloodstains, or trace any of the cryptocurrency wallet addresses associated with the ransom notes. The wallets, blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis told NBC News last month, were funded with a series of "tornado-cash" mixing transactions that effectively obscured the origin of the funds before any of them ever reached the Guthrie family.

Five Questions That Still Haunt Investigators

Three months into one of the most heavily resourced missing-persons investigations in modern Arizona history, the case has reduced down to a small set of questions to which there are still no answers. How did the suspect know Guthrie lived alone on a quiet cul-de-sac? Why was nothing of value taken from the home? Why did the ransom demands stop so abruptly after the second deadline? Who, if anyone, drove a vehicle that has been spotted on three separate doorbell cameras in the neighborhood that night — a vehicle whose make, model and plate the FBI has so far declined to release? And finally: is Nancy Guthrie still alive?

What Americans Can Do

The FBI is asking anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip at tips.fbi.gov. Pima County Sheriff's Department is operating a dedicated tip line at 520-351-4900. The Guthrie family's $1 million reward applies to information leading directly to Nancy's recovery.

For Americans who have followed the case from the beginning, the three-month mark is a sobering reminder of just how many missing-person cases cross that threshold without resolution every year. According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, more than 600,000 Americans are reported missing annually, with roughly 4,400 unidentified remains added to the system in any given year. Most are eventually found. A devastating fraction never are.
