President Trump threatened that he was going to fire Jeff Sessions last July. Days after this, the closes allies of the President desperately tried to save the attorney general’s job.

Reince Priebus was the White House chief of staff. Steve Bannon was the President’s chief strategist. They both leaded with Trump during a meeting in the Oval Office. They wanted Trump to keep Sessions and warned that if he was dismissed that the Russia investigation was going to blow up. The two also said that the move could possibly alienate Trump’s supporters and those in his conservative base.

Sessions is Saved?

Trump fired both Bannon and Priebus within the month. But Sessions survived. John Kelly, chief of staff, delivered his reprieve.

The campaign that Republicans made to save Sessions is continuing ten months later. It seems that it succeeded, at least for now. In public appearances, private meetings, and phone calls, Trump’s allies and advisers tried everything that they could to stop the President from firing the Cabinet official. Trump dismisses Sessions as disloyal. This is one of the few effective attempts that Republicans made to stop a President that’s known for breaking the rules and defying advice.
