  • New arrest: Gregory Wright, 32, is now in custody on aggravated robbery and aggravated riot charges, booked Monday afternoon.
  • Prosecutor’s update: Six others were indicted last week; each faces up to 5 years if convicted on all counts, per the Hamilton County Prosecutor.
  • Federal scrutiny: The FBI says it is coordinating with Cincinnati Police; DOJ officials have acknowledged a federal review of the attack.

A seventh suspect has been arrested in the violent downtown Cincinnati attack that ricocheted across social media and spurred a national debate over public safety and justice. Court officials confirm Gregory Wright, 32, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated riot and aggravated robbery; jail records show he was booked around 4:30 p.m. Mondayhttps://www.fox19.com

What video and police reports allege

Cincinnati police say surveillance captured a suspect removing a gold chain from a victim’s neck while the man was being beaten on the ground. “The suspect then walks away from the location and places property in his pocket, then proceeds to film the rest of the events,” said Central Business District Commander Adam Hennie.

Body-worn camera released by police shows the chaotic aftermath of the July 26 incident and officers arriving on scene around 3:25 a.m. Local and national outlets reported that a single 911 call initially alerted authorities. One victim, known publicly as “Holly,” says she suffered severe head trauma.

City leaders denounced the violence. Mayor Aftab Pureval said he was “outraged” and called the attack “unacceptable and disgusting.” WLWT

Who’s charged so far

Hamilton County grand jury has indicted six defendants on three counts of felonious assault, three counts of assault, and two counts of aggravated riot each. Prosecutor Connie Pillich said those charges could add up to nearly 30 years per defendant upon conviction. The office also highlighted Ohio’s aiding and abetting law as an underlying premise of the case.

Those six are: Aisha Devaughn, 26 (Evanston); Dominique Kittle, 37 (Walnut Hills); Jermaine Matthews, 39 (East Price Hill); Montianez Merriweather, 34 (South Cumminsville); Patrick Rosemond, 38 (Reading); and Dekyra Vernon, 24 (Evanston). https://www.fox19.com

Bond outcomes so far illustrate the case’s seriousness: for example, Aisha Devaughn’s bond was set at $300,000 total, and Jermaine Matthews’ cumulative bond reached $270,000 with conditions including electronic monitoring.

Why the feds are involved

The FBI confirmed last week it has opened a federal investigation and is coordinating with CPD. DOJ officials also acknowledged a federal review, with Fox News Digital reporting the Civil Rights Division is watching closely. (Notably, FOX19 reported DOJ had not issued a formal press release as of that date.)

What the seventh suspect likely faces next (process & potential penalties)

1) Apprehension and booking. Wright has been arrested and booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center.

2) Bond/bail decision. In Ohio, judges now consider public safety, offense seriousness, and criminal history when setting bail—after voters approved Issue 1 (2022). Expect prosecutors to emphasize risk factors at the initial appearance. (General reference: Ohio Issue 1 amended how courts weigh bail.) Ballotpedia

3) Arraignment and counsel. Wright will be arraigned in Municipal Court on the filed charges and, if he cannot afford a lawyer, a public defender is typically appointed. (Routine procedural step.)

4) Probable cause and bind-over. For felony charges, the case proceeds to a preliminary hearing unless a grand jury indictment arrives first; once indicted, it is bound over to Hamilton County Common Pleas Court. The six earlier defendants have already been indicted. hcpros.org

5) Trial or plea. After indictment and discovery, the case moves toward plea negotiations or trial in Common Pleas.

Potential exposure on the charges:

  • Aggravated robberyin Ohio is a first-degree felony, generally carrying a 3–11 year sentencing range.
  • Aggravated riotpenalties vary by subsection, typically F5–F3 depending on circumstances.

Restitution & collateral financial consequences. If convicted, Ohio courts may order restitution for a victim’s economic losses, imposed as part of felony financial sanctions; payments are collected through the court and credited against any later civil recovery.

In practice, restitution and certain court-ordered financial obligations can be collected from inmate earnings or accounts under Ohio law and local policies. Victims may also pursue civil lawsuits seeking damages; any criminal-court restitution paid is typically credited in a related civil action.

Community debate widens

While most public officials have condemned the attack, some community and faith leaders are urging additional charges against others seen on the videos and raising concerns about equity in enforcement. Local coverage documents calls for more arrests and scrutiny of all alleged aggressors as the investigation continues.

The bigger legal picture

This case sits at the intersection of state criminal law and federal civil-rights enforcement. If investigators determine a bias motive, federal hate-crime statutes could potentially come into play, which would raise the stakes considerably. (For now, federal authorities have confirmed an inquiry but have not announced federal charges.)

What it means now

For Gregory Wright, the road ahead is the standard one for serious felonies in Ohio: arraignment, bond, counsel appointment, a probable cause review or indictment, and then the march toward plea or trial. For the six already indicted, the Common Pleas docket will dictate the pace, with hearing dates to follow. The Prosecutor’s Office has telegraphed a firm posture—“These charges hold those involved in the attack accountable,” Prosecutor Connie Pillich said—and the FBI/DOJ presence ensures another layer of scrutiny as the facts are sorted from the viral video noise.
