Skydance Media Merger: Paramount Global Announces Layoffs and Strategic Shifts

Paramount Global

Paramount Global has announced a significant reduction in its U.S. workforce, laying off 15% of its employees as part of a broader strategy to address financial challenges and industry changes.

According to reports from Deadline, these layoffs will affect approximately 3,000 employees, with the cuts being rolled out in three stages.

The majority of these layoffs will be completed by the end of September, with the first wave starting today.

Paramount Global 15% Cuts in Workforce

In a memo to staff, Paramount Global CEOs, George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy, and Brian Robbins, emphasized the necessity of these changes.

“The industry continues to evolve, and Paramount is at an inflection point where changes must be made to strengthen our business,” the memo stated. The CEOs acknowledged the difficulty of these decisions, noting that “having to part ways with teammates whose contributions have been instrumental to our success is incredibly hard.”

They also assured employees that the company’s HR leaders would provide support to those transitioning out of the organization.

Impact on Marketing and Communications

The layoffs will primarily affect employees in the marketing and communications departments, as well as in the legal and finance divisions.

Paramount Global has been grappling with financial pressures, particularly in its cable TV business, which has been in decline. Last week, the company reported a significant shortfall in its second-quarter earnings, with total revenue falling to $6.81 billion, missing the expected $7.21 billion. This financial strain has prompted the company to seek $500 million in annual cost savings.

This is not the first time Paramount has resorted to layoffs. In February, the company reduced its workforce by 3%, despite a 3% increase in revenue growth attributed to its streaming and film businesses.

The contrast between revenue growth and workforce reductions highlights the challenging environment for the company as it seeks to balance profitability with maintaining a robust workforce.

Merger with Skydance Media

These layoffs are also likely linked to Paramount’s forthcoming merger with Skydance Media. The deal was announced in June and is expected to be completed by the first part of 2025. The merger is set to proceed to a regulatory review process, with Skydance poised to take control of Paramount.

David Ellison’s company, Skydance, has made a significant investment of $8 billion to acquire controlling shareholder National Amusements Inc. and eventually merge with Paramount. Financial backers of this deal include RedBird Capital and Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison.

The timing of these layoffs is particularly notable, coming just before the August 21 expiration of the “go-shop” period in the Skydance proposal. This period allows other bidders to come forward with competing offers. If no other compelling offer emerges and gains the support of Paramount’s board, the Skydance transaction will move forward as planned.

Strategic Shifts in Streaming and Content

Paramount Global has also been making strategic adjustments to its streaming services. The company has raised prices for its streaming platform and has also removed entire libraries of content, a move that has been met with mixed reactions from consumers.

While these decisions may make sense from a corporate perspective, they have raised concerns among subscribers and industry observers about the future direction of Paramount’s streaming services.

As it navigates industry pressures and financial challenges, the company is making tough decisions to position itself for long-term success.

The coming months will be critical for Paramount as it works to complete its workforce reductions, finalize its merger with Skydance, and adjust its business strategy to meet the evolving demands of the media landscape.
