SpaceX priced its Starlink satellite internet service for $99 per month and it is inviting certain consumers to participate in the "Better Than Nothing" public beta test of the service.

Some people shared on Reddit that they received an invitation from SpaceX indicating that in addition to the monthly subscription fee, consumers will have to pay a $499 upfront cost for the Starlink satellite internet service kit, which includes a user terminal, mounting tripod, and router.

SpaceX also stated in the e-mail that it is lowering the initial expectations for the  Starlink satellite internet service's data speed data speeds and latency. The company said its internet service can provide data speeds from 50MB/s to 150Mb/s and latency from 20ms to 40ms over the next several months as it works to "enhance the Starlin system" during the beta test.

"There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all. As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations, and improve our networking software, data speed, latency, and uptime will improve dramatically. For latency, we expect to achieve 16ms to 19ms by summer 2021," according to SpaceX in the e-mail sent to consumers.

The company also wrote, "The Starlink phased-array user terminal, which is more advanced than what's in the fighter jets plus mounting tripod and wifi router, costs $499 and the monthly subscription fee costs $99.

Consumers who received the e-mail were those who expressed interest to become a Starlink satellite internet subscriber by filling out a form, providing their contact information and location.

The public beta test followed a limited private beta test that participated by its employees. At the time, SpaceX said its Starlink satellite internet service showed fast download speeds of more than 100Mb/s and very low latency.

SpaceX senior certification engineer Kate Tice said the Starlink satellite internet service will allow users to "play the fastest online video games" and to "stream, multiple HD movies at once."

SpaceX launched 60 more Starlink satellites

Last week, SpaceX launched an additional 60 Starlink satellites to the low Earth orbit, bringing the total to nearly 900.

The company is inching closer to achieving Elon Musk's immediate goal to deploy 1,584 satellites to build an internet connectivity constellation to provide super-fast, low-latency internet service to consumers in every corner of the world at an affordable price.

SpaceX estimated that it will spend around $10 billion or more to build an internet connectivity constellation. It also estimated that the service could generate as much as $30 billion in annual revenue.
