spectrum outages

Widespread Spectrum outages hit the Los Angeles area on June 15 and 16, leaving thousands without internet, cable, or phone service. The company confirmed the disruption was “caused by a criminal act of vandalism,” according to a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Fiber Cut in Van Nuys Blamed for Service Disruptions

Spectrum acknowledged the outages in a public statement posted at 2:13 p.m. PT on June 16, on X:

“We are currently working on a fiber cut affecting the Los Angeles area. We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. Thank you.”

The company later confirmed to CNN that the incident involved intentional vandalism in Van Nuys. The fiber cut impacted not just Los Angeles but also extended to surrounding areas like Ventura and cities in Orange County, including Anaheim and Santa Ana.

According to DownDetector, more than 25,000 users reported issues with the Spectrum service. Users began experiencing problems as early as 3 a.m. Pacific Time on June 15, with major spikes occurring around 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Spectrum Offers $25,000 Reward for Information

Spectrum is now working with the Los Angeles Police Department and is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.

“Criminal acts of network vandalism have become an issue affecting the entire telecommunications industry, not just Spectrum, largely due to the increase in the price of precious metals,” the company stated. “These acts of vandalism... affect our customers, local businesses and potentially emergency services.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Spectrum at (833) 404-8477 or contact local law enforcement.

Service Restoration Underway

As of Sunday afternoon, Spectrum said it had restored service in Ventura and expected Los Angeles services to come back online later that day. The company emphasized that while their fiber lines do not contain copper, they remain targets for theft and sabotage due to misinformed criminal motives.

This is not an isolated incident. In May, Spectrum reported a similar case of vandalism in Kansas City, where two fiber cuts, including one by a third-party provider, triggered major disruptions.

Spectrum, which serves over 57 million customers in 41 states, continues to investigate and secure its infrastructure in light of the growing threat.
