Hamby encouraged Castner to excel in school.
Their connection was established through CISD’s Project Mentor program, designed to support children in need of help by pairing them with caring adults. Hamby recognized Castner’s potential and became a guiding force in her life.
The support and encouragement provided by Hamby were pivotal in Castner’s journey. Hamby, who is unrelated to the school, played an instrumental role in Castner’s life.
Castner viewed her high marks as a symbol of accomplishment and a path to success.
“There was something satisfying about having all As and having that accomplishment,” she said. “Grades just meant a lot to me.”
She accompanied Castner on various significant moments, from getting glasses and haircuts to visiting Harvard’s campus. Hamby’s social media posts repeatedly expressed her pride in Castner’s achievements.
