Savannah said the family is desperate for information. Royal Caribbean has not told the family how long the ship’s crew searched for her brother.
Technology that protects not installed
“I ask that they take matters like this seriously,” Savannah said in an email. “Install man overboard systems, respond ASAP when someone is yelling ‘Oscar, Oscar, Oscar’ Be CLEAR when communicating WHO is searching for our boy.”
The latest available Industry Data Report of 2009 to 2019 said that 19 people die every year from falling off cruise ships. In the last 90 days there have been public reports that 5 people (including Sigmund) have gone overboard.
As of 2010, cruise ships have been required by law to install technology to help prevent overboard deaths.
But to date the US Coast Guard isn’t enforcing the requirements or inspecting ships for the technology.
