San Antonio, Texas — A disturbing plot to carry out a mass school shooting was reportedly foiled this week thanks to the bravery and quick thinking of a grandmother who turned in her own daughter to authorities.

Ashley Pardo, 33, was arrested Monday and charged with aiding in the commission of terrorism, after she allegedly supplied her 13-year-old son with ammunition, a tactical vest, helmet, camouflage gear, and firearm magazines — all in preparation for what officials are calling a planned “mass targeted violence” attack at Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio.

The teenager, whose name is being withheld due to his age, had already shown signs of violent ideation, according to an affidavit obtained by USA Herald. His behavioral record reveals a grim pattern of obsession with mass shooters, violent drawings, and ultimately, an alleged suicide attempt.

But it was his grandmother’s actions that led to Pardo’s arrest and may have prevented an unimaginable tragedy.

Timeline of a Nearly Executed Nightmare

According to court documents, school authorities first contacted the child in January over disturbing drawings that depicted a labeled map of Rhodes Middle School with a “suicide route” and a rifle sketch.

The boy openly admitted a “fascination with past mass shooters,” and by April, things escalated dramatically. He was caught researching the 2019 Christchurch mosque massacre — a white supremacist terror attack in New Zealand that left 51 dead — on a school-issued laptop. The same day, he reportedly attempted suicide using a straight razor, requiring over 100 stitches.

Still, the warning signs continued to mount.

After a brief stint at an alternative school, the boy returned to Rhodes Middle School on May 7 — but by May 13, his grandmother contacted police after she caught him hitting a live bullet with a hammer.

According to the affidavit, the boy told her, “I got it from Mom.”

That chilling moment prompted the grandmother to search the boy’s bedroom, where she discovered:

  • Fully loaded rifle and pistol magazines
  • An improvised explosive device (a mortar-style firework wrapped in duct tape) labeled “For Brenton Tarrant
  • Several symbols linked to white supremacist ideology, including “SS” runes and the “14 Words” slogan
  • A handwritten manifesto referencing past mass shootings and body counts

Mother’s Alleged Complicity: Aiding Hate in Exchange for Babysitting

Perhaps most disturbing was the alleged conduct of the mother herself.

Authorities say Pardo knew about her son’s violent threats and his disturbing drawings — but instead of seeking help, she doubled down.

She allegedly took him to a military surplus store where she purchased:

  • tactical black vest capable of concealing ballistic plates
  • tactical helmet
  • Magazines for firearms
  • Camouflage jackets and army clothing

All of it, reportedly, in exchange for her son babysitting his younger siblings.

The affidavit further alleges that Pardo expressed no concern for his behavior and supported his violent fantasies. On the day he was detained, the boy reportedly said, I’m going to be famous — just before his mother dropped him off at school wearing tactical gear.

Rhodes Middle School Responds

In a letter to parentsPrincipal Felismina Martinez confirmed the student was detained off-campus and charged with terrorism.

“Please know we take all potential threats seriously and act immediately to protect everyone in our care,” Martinez said. “We will always remain vigilant to ensure our learning and working environment is safe and secure.”

The teen is currently in custody at the Bexar County Juvenile Detention Facility, where a judge will determine his future.

Pardo was released on $75,000 bond on Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in court for a pre-indictment hearing on July 17.

Legal Ramifications and National Concerns

While this incident is localized, its implications ripple nationwide. The boy’s glorification of white supremacist killers and obsession with mass shootings highlights the disturbing intersection of domestic terrorism, radical ideology, and parental complicity.

Legal experts believe Pardo’s case may test the boundaries of Texas terrorism statutes, especially in evaluating parental responsibility for a child’s radicalization.

Moreover, the reference to the Christchurch shooter — and the detailed planning allegedly undertaken by a 13-year-old — underscores the FBI’s warnings about domestic extremist content spreading via online platforms to youth.

If convicted, Pardo could face significant prison time and possible federal charges, depending on the nature of the weapons and explosive device.

Final Thought

This story could’ve ended very differently. But thanks to the grandmother’s courage, a potential act of mass violence was stopped before it began.

Her act was more than maternal instinct — it was moral heroism.
