SAN DIEGO, CA - On June 26, 2025, Tony Robbins—the globally renowned motivational speaker and coach—filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, accusing InnoLeap AI LLC and Mira Muse LLC of orchestrating “a blatant, calculated, digital heist of valuable and unique intellectual property.” As laid out in the complaint, YesChat.ai’s platform promotes and monetizes AI chatbots that “don’t just mimic Robbins, they masquerade as him.” This groundbreaking case could redefine how celebrity rights intersect with emerging AI technologies.

Brian Wolf, Robbins’ attorney, concedes that many creators have sued over AI models trained on unauthorized content—and that some companies have successfully defended those suits by invoking “fair use”—but he insists this case is fundamentally different.

“Those cases are different than this case, where they’re mimicking and recreating a virtual persona of a well-known individual and advertising it as such,” said Wolf, of Lavely & Singer. “We represent innumerable celebrities and public figures, and we take a pretty aggressive approach on behalf of those clients.”

Robbins’ Trademarks and Proprietary Content
Plaintiffs Robbins Research International, Inc. and TR Legacy, LLC own exclusive rights to Robbins’ name, image, likeness, voice, and persona (collectively, “NIL”), alongside a suite of registered trademarks—most notably “Anthony Robbins” and “Tony Robbins.” Over four decades, Robbins has developed proprietary coaching frameworks, seminars, and materials that form the foundation of his global brand.

YesChat.ai’s Business Model
According to the complaint, YesChat.ai operates “an AI chatbot platform offering users … access to over 200,000 AI‑generated chatbots or ‘GPTs’ (short for Generative Pre‑trained Transformers). These chatbots are trained to simulate the language, style, and knowledge of particular personalities or subject matters.” Users pay subscription fees—$8/month (“Pro”), $16/month (“Ultra”), or $40/month (“Unlimited”)—to interact with these bots as though they were engaging with public figures, including Tony Robbins.

Key Allegations

1. Trademark Infringement & False Designation

Robbins’ lawsuit asserts that Defendants used his registered marks without authorization, violating the Lanham Act. The complaint emphasizes:

“Defendants … constructed an entire business model around impersonating various persons and public figures as GPT AI chatbot replicas, including … Anthony ‘Tony’ Robbins. … Defendants promote and distribute AI chatbot replicas that don’t just mimic Robbins, they masquerade as him.”

This “passing off” of unauthorized bots under the ROBBINS mark is alleged to cause consumer confusion and divert revenue from Robbins’ own offerings. Plaintiffs seek statutory damages, treble damages, and attorneys’ fees under 15 U.S.C. §1114(a) and §1125(a).

2. Statutory & Common‑Law Misappropriation of Name and Likeness

Under California Civil Code §3344 and common‑law publicity principles, Robbins holds exclusive rights to commercial use of his identity. Yet, the complaint charges:

“Defendants … falsely and fraudulently suggest that users are interacting with Robbins himself, thereby misleading the public and unlawfully trading on his identity.”

Robbins is seeking at least $10 million in compensatory damages for unfair competition, $2 million for each trademark infringement, and further punitive damages to address the defendants’ willful and malicious misconduct.

3. Unfair Competition & False Advertising

Plaintiffs allege that YesChat.ai’s practice of hosting bots branded as “Tony Robbins GPT,” “Coach Tony,” and “Talk to Tony Robbins” constitutes unfair competition (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 17200) and false advertising:

“These GPTs … falsely and fraudulently suggest that users are interacting with Robbins himself, … misleading the public and unlawfully trading on his identity.”

They seek restitution of all profits garnered from these deceptive practices and injunctive relief barring further misuse of Robbins’ NIL and trademarks.

Anatomy of the Infringing Chatbots

  1. Data Ingestion & Fine‑Tuning
Third‑party developers upload transcripts of Robbins’ seminars, copyrighted courses, and published works to an AI model—commonly GPT‑4 or Claude3 variants—training it to emulate Robbins’ tone, methods, and signature phrases.
  2. Marketplace Deployment
Developers list these fine‑tuned models on YesChat.ai under tiered subscriptions. The platform’s infrastructure “hosts and promotes GPTs that impersonate Robbins and … provide his services, materials and coaching.”
  3. Monetization & Consumer Confusion
With titles like “Tony Robbins GPT – Personal Development Guide” and “Tony Robbins – AI Life Coaching,”the bots are positioned as legitimate Robbins products. YesChat.ai “offer[s] over 10,000 AI chatbots … Among these are more than ten separate GPTs labeled with Robbins’ name … incorporating Robbins’ NIL, the ROBBINS Marks, and the Robbins Brand.”
  4. Unauthorized Bypass of Official Channels
The complaint highlights how these bots “redirect the very type of engagement that would otherwise lead consumers to attend Robbins’ seminars, purchase his courses, or seek out licensed Robbins content and services.” All profits flow to YesChat.ai and bot creators—none to Robbins or his licensees.

Impact and Industry Implications

  • Precedent Setting: A ruling for Robbins could compel AI‑marketplace operators to secure licenses before hosting personality‑based chatbots.
  • Fair Use vs. Right of Publicity: While many AI developers invoke fair use to train models on public data, this suit underscores the distinction when AI replicas are specifically crafted to exploit a celebrity’s name and brand for direct commercial gain.
  • Consumer Protection: Regulators and courts may increase scrutiny of deceptive AI‑driven persona products, demanding clearer disclosures and licensing protocols.

Robbins’ complaint seeks:

  1. Preliminary and Permanent Injunctions prohibiting continued use of his NIL and trademarks in any YesChat.ai offerings.
  2. Destruction of Infringing Chatbots and removal of all promotional materials on the platform.
  3. Monetary Relief totaling at least $10 million in compensatory damages, $2 million per trademark violation, treble damages, disgorgement of profits, attorneys’ fees, and punitive damages.

If granted, this lawsuit could set legal precedence for AI‑generated impersonations and fortify public figures’ control over their digital likenesses.
