For many people, having to check a bag is par for the course when taking a flight. Because of the weight, size, and other restrictions tied to carry-on luggage, there are only so many items one can take in a bag that’s expected not to span beyond (depending on your airline) nine inches deep, 14 inches wide, and 22 inches high.

Unfortunately, when checking a bag, there’s always a risk of the luggage getting lost along the way. This risk can increase for travelers who have multiple layovers and connecting flights. Thankfully, some helpful travel hacks exist to avoid losing checked bags.

Track your baggage through your airline’s mobile app

Virtually every airline today has an app that you can download onto your phone. Once you enter your flight’s confirmation code within the app, you’ll see a series of details pertaining to your trip. This typically includes the bag(s) you checked in with your air carrier.

Many apps, especially from large airlines like American and Delta, have bag tracking features built in. These tools allow you to keep up with your baggage in real time from the moment you’ve checked it in.
