Spending time overseas presents wonderful opportunities to connect with the culture, explore museums, try different foods, and broaden your horizons.

With many apps and services available to streamline tourism, more people are taking advantage of the travel opportunities before them. Further empowering the rise of travel is the growth of remote work, the freelance/gig economy, and digital nomad lifestyles.

Despite these benefits and opportunities, staying safe, making sure you pack all the necessary items, and avoiding travel scams couldn't be more important. Thankfully, there are some tried and true ways to avoid being taken advantage of during your trips.

Three scams to steer clear of

Amid many unscrupulous characters looking to exploit unsuspecting travelers, keeping your wits about you matters. Enjoy your trip, but remain mindful of the following scams.

Vacation rental scams

Whenever you're seeking accommodations for your trip, make sure you're booking through a valid source. Airbnb, VBRO, or hotel websites are great options, but don't forget to vet these as well.

When seeking hostels, B&Bs, or other similar listings, be sure to check out their reviews and verification status on the site(s). If the property owner asks for your personal information or to go off-platform, discontinue any communication and don't send them money.

Free bracelet scams

Even some of the most experienced travelers can be unprepared for the free bracelet scam. This typically involves a local coming up to you and tying what appears to be a handmade bracelet around your wrist. After doing this, they'll pressure you for money, despite offering the jewelry unsolicited.

When you are traveling, do not allow anyone to put a bracelet or other similar items on your body. If they offer to, simply say "no, thank you" and walk away.

Airport helper scam

After getting off a long flight and clearing customs, your primary focus is likely going to be getting to your accommodations as quickly as possible.

Whether you've arranged transportation ahead of time or are hailing an Uber, be wary of strangers at the airport who volunteer to move your trolleys or luggage for you. In many cases, this is not an act of kindness, but a prerequisite to a local asking you, the tourist, for money in exchange for the "service."

Typically, if you have an Uber coming or a pre-arranged driver waiting, they will be more than happy to assist with your luggage sans strings attached.
