Troutman Pepper

A bombshell lawsuit has been unleashed against Troutman Pepper, accusing the prominent law firm of sidelining and ultimately terminating a Black associate, Gita Sankano, for blowing the whistle on racial bias. In a gripping 38-page complaint filed in federal court on Wednesday, Sankano alleges a harrowing saga of discrimination, biased treatment, and a shocking dismissal after flagging a partner's belittling email.

Troutman Pepper Fired Attorney For Flagging Race Bias: A Rocky Start at Pepper Hamilton

Sankano, hired in 2019 as an associate at Pepper Hamilton LLP, details a rocky journey from the outset. Despite positive performance feedback, she contends she was denied the same training as her white counterparts and faced discrimination from certain partners. An instruction to email billable hours directly, not given to white colleagues, led to a zero-hour quarter for Sankano in 2019, allegedly fueled by a partner's attempts to boost personal profitability.

Merging Dreams, Broken Promises: The Birth of Troutman Pepper

Troutman Pepper's merger with Pepper Hamilton in 2020 brought promises of increased work for Sankano, but the reality fell short until a town hall meeting in the wake of George Floyd's murder. Sankano's move to the multifamily housing group in August 2020 didn't ease her struggles, even as she earned positive reviews, raises, and bonuses.

Troutman Pepper Fired Attorney For Flagging Race Bias: The Hostile Email Incident

Trouble escalated when Sankano clashed with a white partner in 2023, enduring belittling comments and questioning of her competence. A demeaning email triggered her complaint, leading to an HR investigation that found the message inappropriate but not racist. Yet, less than a month later, Sankano was blindsided with termination based on a yet-unseen 2023 performance review.

The Twisted Twist: Performance Review Raises Eyebrows

Upon finally receiving her evaluation, Sankano found statements suggesting an expectation for her to continue working through 2024, contradicting the abrupt firing. Compounding the chaos, Sankano's main collaborator, also Black, was allegedly left in the dark before the termination, causing complications amid maternity leave preparations.

Firm Denies Wrongdoing: Legal Battle Looms

Troutman Pepper spokesperson Diane Iselin staunchly defends the termination, citing "legitimate, non-discriminatory reasons based solely on her performance." Sankano's attorney, Michael Willemin of Wigdor LLP, condemns the alleged discrimination and retaliation, emphasizing the need for firms to address workplace discrimination rather than retaliate against courageous whistleblowers.

Troutman Pepper Fired Attorney For Flagging Race Bias : The Legal Battlefield Ahead

Sankano's complaint invokes violations of Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act and the D.C. Human Rights Act, accusing the firm of race discrimination and retaliation. As the legal clash intensifies, the courtroom drama unfolds, shedding light on the challenges faced by Black women in the legal profession.
