Trump buys millions in tech stocks before federal policy boosts business

By Tylor Brooks | USA Herald

President Donald Trump bought and sold millions of dollars in technology and defense contractor stocks early this year, according to new government records. The high-volume trading spree directly coincided with lucrative federal contract decisions and regulatory approvals from his own administration. Newly filed financial disclosures reveal that Trump executed more than 3,600 individual financial trades during the first three months of 2026 alone.

High-stakes chips and timely trades

The newly released Office of Government Ethics filings showcase an aggressive pivot in the president's personal investment strategy. After largely avoiding individual equities in favor of corporate and municipal bonds during the first year of his second term, Trump loaded up on high-performing artificial intelligence and semiconductor firms.

The timing of several multi-million dollar purchases occurred just days before major business-altering federal policy shifts.

  • January 6: Trump purchased between $500,000 and $1 million in Nvidia stock, alongside $50,000 to $100,000 in Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock.

  • January 13: Exactly one week later, the U.S. Department of Commerce officially authorized both Nvidia and AMD to resume high-end AI chip sales to lucrative markets in China.

  • February 10: Trump acquired another $1 million to $5 million chunk of Nvidia shares. Seven days later, the company announced a massive computing power agreement with Meta.

In total, Trump poured at least $740,000 into AMD during the first quarter of 2026, while positioning millions in Nvidia, the world’s most valuable semiconductor manufacturer.

Profiting from the border surge

The financial disclosures also reveal heavy investment in private entities tasked with executing the administration's flagship immigration and law enforcement policies. As billions of federal dollars flow toward mass deportation operations, Trump’s portfolio actively expanded into key Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contractors.

Trump poured at least $260,000 into data-mining giant Palantir Technologies between January and March. In a highly active sequence, Trump bought up to $150,000 of Palantir stock in January, liquidated between $1.1 million and $5.3 million in February, and bought back up to $500,000 in March.

Concurrently, Palantir secured a billion-dollar software contract with DHS to power the administration's intensified deportation push. The firm holds a separate billion-dollar artificial intelligence development deal with the Pentagon.

A similar pattern emerged with Axon, the manufacturer behind Taser law enforcement technology. On February 10, Trump purchased between $1 million and $5 million in Axon shares. Two weeks later, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced a massive $220 million, five-year contract procurement plan to purchase 17,800 new Tasers from the Arizona-based corporation.

White House denies any conflict

Federal ethics laws dictate that presidents must report their trading behaviors, though they are permitted to do so within broad financial ranges. When questioned regarding the ethics of trading companies directly impacted by Executive Branch decisions, both the White House and the Trump Organization denied any direct executive involvement.

"President Trump's investment holdings are maintained exclusively through fully discretionary accounts independently managed by third-party financial institutions with sole and exclusive authority over all investment decisions," a Trump Organization spokesperson stated, asserting that portfolios are balanced through automated, independent systems.

The White House doubled down on the separation between policy and personal wealth, framing the president's finances as insulated from his official duties.

"President Trump's assets are in a trust managed by his children. There are no conflicts of interest," White House spokesman Davis Ingle stated in an official email.

The transaction disclosures add friction to an ongoing national debate regarding whether high-ranking politicians should be permitted to trade individual stocks. During his last State of the Union address, Trump publicly signaled support for a congressional stock trading ban, telling lawmakers to ensure officials "cannot corruptly profit from using insider information."

Capitol Hill critics quickly pointed out the apparent double standard. During that very address, Democratic Representative Mark Takano of California interrupted the speech by shouting, "How about you first?"

Beyond defense and AI giants, Trump's active portfolio holds stakes in other top-tier multinational entities whose executives are currently traveling with the president on an official diplomatic trip to China, including Apple, Blackstone, and Goldman Sachs. What remains to be seen is how federal watchdog agencies or congressional subcommittees will respond to the sheer velocity of the trades.
