Trump Unveils $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget With Massive $750 Billion Push for Ships, Jets and “Golden Dome” Shield

A historic military buildup is taking shape in Washington, with President Donald Trump’s $1.5 trillion defense budget request for fiscal year 2027 signaling the largest year-over-year jump in U.S. defense spending since World War II. The scale is staggering, the priorities are aggressive, and the Pentagon is reshaping how America prepares for future warfare.

The proposal puts naval power, air dominance, artificial intelligence, and missile defense at the center of a sweeping modernization plan that officials say will redefine the U.S. military’s global reach.

Pentagon unveils historic spending surge

The Pentagon on Tuesday released new details of Trump’s $1.5 trillion defense budget request, confirming a dramatic expansion in spending that dwarfs recent years.

Last year, Trump asked Congress for a national defense budget of $892.6 billion then added $150 billion through a supplemental budget request, sending the total price tag over $1 trillion for the first time in history.

Now, officials say the 2027 request accelerates that trajectory even further, combining a base budget and supplemental funding package that together reach unprecedented levels.

“Presidential priorities” reshape Pentagon strategy

A major shift in this year’s plan is a newly defined funding category that concentrates the administration’s top military goals into a single bucket.

“In a new wrinkle, the Pentagon has created a category it is calling "presidential priorities," covering Golden Dome missile defense, drone dominance, artificial intelligence and data infrastructure, and the defense industrial base, Pentagon officials told reporters.”

The move signals a strategic pivot toward integrated high-tech warfare, homeland defense systems, and industrial capacity expansion.

Golden Fleet drives $65 billion shipbuilding boom

Naval expansion sits at the center of the budget, with more than $65 billion earmarked to build 18 warships and 16 support ships produced by General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries as part of what officials are calling the “Golden Fleet” initiative.

The scale of the request marks the largest shipbuilding push since 1962, underscoring rising concerns over maritime competition and global naval readiness.

F-35 expansion and next-generation air power

Air dominance remains another cornerstone of the spending plan. The budget increases Lockheed Martin F-35 procurement to 85 aircraft per year and allocates $102 billion for aircraft procurement and research and development, a 26% jump from the previous year.

Officials also highlighted continued development of next-generation platforms, including Boeing’s F-47 fighter jet, alongside a $6.1 billion request for Northrop Grumman’s B-21 bomber program.

Drone warfare surge reaches historic levels

Unmanned systems and counter-drone technology receive one of the most aggressive funding increases in the entire budget.

“The budget is the largest investment in drone warfare and counter-drone technology in U.S. history.”

The request includes $53.6 billion for autonomous drone platforms and battlefield logistics, plus $21 billion for munitions, counter-drone systems, and advanced defense technologies.

Funding for the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group would jump dramatically from roughly $225 million to about $54 billion, with officials saying much of the money targets existing deployable technologies rather than long-term research. The group has also absorbed the Pentagon’s earlier Replicator drone initiative.

Troop pay raises and military expansion

Beyond technology and hardware, the budget also addresses personnel costs and force readiness.

Junior enlisted troops would receive a 7% pay increase, while mid-level personnel get 6% and senior ranks 5%.

The Pentagon also proposes expanding the force by 44,000 service members in fiscal 2027, following an increase of more than 20,000 in fiscal 2026.

Supplemental funding needed for Iran-related costs

Despite the massive topline figure, the budget does not include funding tied to the conflict with Iran. A senior Pentagon official said timing issues in the appropriations process mean a supplemental request will likely be required to cover near-term operational costs and equipment replenishment.

A split funding strategy pushes total to $1.5 trillion

The full package is divided between a $1.15 trillion base request and a $350 billion supplemental budget request. Officials said the structure will require a reconciliation-style legislative approach similar to last year’s funding framework.
