A carefully staged Bible reading from the Oval Office has thrust Donald Trump back into the center of America’s culture and faith divide, arriving at a moment already charged with backlash from religious leaders, political opponents, and even some of his own Christian supporters.

The video message, recorded inside the White House and released during a weeklong faith-focused event, comes as Trump faces renewed scrutiny over his rhetoric, a recent clash with Pope Leo XIV, and controversy sparked by an AI-generated image that some viewers interpreted as depicting him as Jesus.

Oval Office Bible Reading

Trump appeared in a taped message recorded in the Oval Office with the presidential flag behind him, reading scripture from the Old Testament during an event framed as a national spiritual call.

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land,"

The passage came from 2 Chronicles 7:11-22, delivered as part of the America Reads the Bible event, which organizers described as a “sacred opportunity to call our nation back to its spiritual foundation.”

The reading was livestreamed from Washington, D.C. by Great American Media, a Texas-based company known for producing family and faith-centered content.

Faith Event Backed by Conservative Groups

The broader initiative was organized by the Family Policy Alliance Foundation through its ministry Christians Engaged. The group has long advocated for defunding abortion providers and restricting transgender medical care.

The weeklong Bible-reading marathon is expected to include participation from other high-profile Trump administration figures, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Christians Engaged founder Bunni Pounds told Fox News Digital the event carries a broader message about faith in public life.

"We’re making a statement during this week as America reads the Bible, that there is so much in the Bible that we can gain wisdom and discernment from, there is so much that can heal our families, that can rescue us from depression and anxiety and can heal our inner cities and heal our land ... I believe the president’s saying that by reading this scripture specifically,"

Rising Political and Religious Tensions

Trump’s appearance comes as he faces intensifying criticism from both political and religious corners following a series of controversial moments.

Earlier in April, he drew widespread condemnation after threatening to “wipe out Iranian civilization” while pressuring Iran over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.

The remarks triggered a rare rebuke from Pope Leo XIV, who called them “truly unacceptable”.

Trump responded forcefully on Truth Social, escalating tensions with the Vatican leadership.

"weak on crime" and "terrible for foreign policy". He also said the pope was only elected so the conclave could curry favor with him.

The exchange reignited discussion around Trump’s religious upbringing, including his childhood attendance at a Manhattan church whose pastor opposed John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign over his Catholic faith.

The fallout has also created political pressure within the Republican Party as it prepares for the 2026 midterm elections. A recent Pew Research Center poll found that more than eight in 10 American Catholics view Pope Leo XIV favorably.

AI Image Controversy Adds to Backlash

Trump has also faced criticism from some Christian allies after posting an AI-generated image that appeared to show him as Jesus caring for a sick man in a hospital bed.

Some conservative supporters condemned the image as disrespectful. When asked about the post, which was later deleted, Trump said he believed it showed him as a doctor.

Despite the controversy, evangelical Christians remain one of Trump’s most reliable political bases.

Religion, Politics, and a Blurring Line

On the campaign trail, Trump has repeatedly promised to “bring back Christianity” to American public life, and his administration has taken steps that critics say blur the line between church and state.

He previously created a Religious Liberty Commission tasked with reviewing issues such as voluntary prayer in public schools and First Amendment protections for religious leaders.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who chairs the commission, recently described Democrats as the “anti-God left,” underscoring the increasingly polarizing intersection of faith and politics surrounding Trump’s messaging.
