Germany is said to be adding 8,000 troops at the Lithuanian border. And at least 1,000 troops from Great Britain are heading to positions along the border.
Ukraine Invasion or peacekeeping mission?
Earlier in the day, Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, issued a public warning for all American citizens in Ukraine. They are asked to leave the country immediately. Sullivan warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin may launch an attack on Ukraine at any time.
The Pentagon says it is assembling troops adjacent to Ukraine as a demonstration of American commitment to NATO allies. And to deter the possible Russian invasion.
The American troops are in training with host-nation forces. Americans are not allowed to cross the border without direct orders. Their mission is said to be deterrence, not engagement.
The Pentagon claims that although the troops are combat-ready they will hopefully not have to fight anyone.
