Uvalde Municipal Court Judge Richard O. Gonzales, who has been presiding over cases related to the 2022 Uvalde school shooting, is on a 90-day leave of absence following a drug-related arrest.

This decision was made by the Uvalde City Council during a meeting, with a 4-1 vote. Gonzales' leave comes as he faces charges stemming from a recent incident where drugs were found in his home during a search.

Drug-Related Arrest of Judge and Family Members
According to a report from KSAT, officers were serving an indictment to the judge's grandson when they discovered drugs at Gonzales’ residence. 

The arrest included the judge, his grandson, and three others. This development adds complexity to Gonzales' role in overseeing key cases related to the Uvalde school shooting.

Gonzales had been assigned to the legal proceedings of former Uvalde school district police chief Pete Arredondo and former school police officer Adrian Gonzales. 

Both individuals face charges for their failure to adequately respond to the Robb Elementary School shooting.

Arrests and Charges for Arredondo and Gonzales
In June, Pete Arredondo was arrested and charged with 10 counts of child endangerment, as reported by CBS News. These charges relate to the tragic events of May 2022, when an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary. Arredondo was released after posting bond for each of the charges.

Adrian Gonzales was indicted on 29 counts for failing to respond appropriately during the active shooter situation. 

Court documents allege that he had the opportunity to follow active shooter protocols but failed to act. Gonzales was also released on bond after posting $10,000 for each count.

Both Arredondo and Adrian Gonzales have pleaded not guilty.

Victims' Families Continue to Seek Accountability
For the families of the victims, the legal proceedings are deeply emotional. Jesse Rizo, uncle of victim Jackie Cazares, commented, "[It's] very emotional. I knew the day was going to come. I wasn't sure how long it would take," in a statement to CBS News.

The Uvalde school district, while acknowledging the indictments, expressed condolences to the families affected by the shooting. 

The indictments arrive more than two years after the horrific event that claimed the lives of 21 people.

Legal Fallout Continues
Arredondo has faced significant public criticism for his role during the incident. In an interview with the Texas Tribune, he stated that he "never considered himself the scene’s incident commander." 

Despite this, he was fired by the Uvalde school board in August 2022. Last month, Arredondo claimed he had been "scapegoated" for the failed law enforcement response.

Currently, Arredondo and Adrian Gonzales are the only individuals charged for their actions that day. There were nearly 400 law enforcement officers who responded but delayed entering the school.

Settlement with Victims' Families
In May, just days before the two-year anniversary of the shooting, the families of the victims reached a $2 million settlement with the city of Uvalde.
