A recall that first quietly surfaced back in April just resurfaced with new details attached. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an updated notice on a white rice recall, offering a clearer picture of just how far the affected product traveled before it was pulled.

The Original Recall

Lundberg Family Farms initiated the recall in April, pulling back more than 27,000 packages of its White Jasmine Rice over concerns the product may have been contaminated with foreign materials, according to the FDA's recall notice. The recalled rice was sold in 2-pound bags — a common household size that made the potential reach of the contamination especially concerning.

Identifying the Affected Product

Consumers can check whether they have the recalled rice by looking for the Universal Product Code 073416-040281. Two specific lot codes are included in the recall: 260201MA, carrying a best-by date of Feb. 1, 2027, and 260202MA, with a best-by date of Feb. 2, 2027.

Where the Rice Was Sold

The FDA's updated notice revealed the rice had been distributed across 13 states: California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin — a geographic footprint spanning coast to coast. The product commonly appeared on shelves at major retail chains including Wegmans, Walmart, Target, Whole Foods and Giant.

The Company's Response

In a statement to PEOPLE on Aug. 29, a spokesperson for Lundberg Family Farms said the affected product had already been pulled from store shelves several months earlier. The spokesperson added that the issue was isolated to a single production run, and that no illnesses had been reported in connection with consuming the affected rice — details meant to reassure consumers that the immediate danger, if any, appears to have passed.

How Serious Is This Recall?

The FDA classified this recall as Class II, a designation reserved for situations where a product "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences," or where the likelihood of serious health consequences is considered remote, according to the agency's own classification guidelines — placing this recall in a middle tier of concern, below the most severe Class I designation.

How the Recall First Came to Light

Interestingly, a voluntary recall covering this same product and matching lot codes was first announced by Wegmans back on April 4, though the specific states affected weren't disclosed publicly at that time — meaning this latest FDA update effectively fills in a gap that had existed since the initial announcement months earlier.
