Ten people have passed away in a mass shooting during a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, California, the Los Angeles Sherrif Department said.

"At least ten people have also been injured in the attack," Captain Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said at a press conference. The shooting is the fifth mass killing in the United States in the month of January, according to the Associated Press.

The terror happened at 10 pm PST at a ballroom dance studio on Lunar New Year's Eve. Meyer said at the press conference that people were "pouring out of the location screaming" when police arrived on Saturday night.

A local restaurant owner, Seung Won Choi, told the LA Times that three people who hid in his restaurant said they saw a gunman firing a semi-automatic weapon.

The shooter ran away and is still unidentified.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said that the suspected is described as a "male Asian" at a later press conference on Sunday. Luna said witnesses described "a white cargo van," that is now a "van of interest."

Luna said that witnesses also described "different weapons" and "in regards to the specific weapon, we don't believe it was an assault rifle"

Police are also investigating if the suspect have visited a different ballroom, the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio in nearby Alhambra, according to CBS Los Angeles.

"We are aware of an incident that occurred in Alhambra and we have investigators on scene trying to determine if there is a connection," Meyer said during the press conference, according to CBS Los Angeles.
