The growing number of terrorists at the border has broader implications for national security. Two Iranians considered security threats, were apprehended at the U.S. border over the past two weeks, according to sources within U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

These arrests have raised red flags within the security community since both individuals appeared on the Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB).

In its 2024 Homeland Threat Assessment report released in September, the agency admitted that migrants seeking entry to the United States are still arriving at record rates.

The crisis at the border already had escalating security challenges. Adding to the unease is the fact that these apprehensions are not isolated incidents.

In the first two weeks of the fiscal year 2023, the CBP detained more than 30 Iranians, nearly 60 Syrians, 35 Pakistanis, over 100 Russians, 285 Afghans, and almost 2,000 Chinese migrants at the southern border.

This surge in individuals from diverse backgrounds attempting to enter the U.S. raises questions about the effectiveness of border control measures.

Terrorists at the border

Homeland can only analyze the risk of people that they encounter. With the wide-open situation at the Southern border, it is hard to estimate how many migrants entered the U.S. without being stopped or “encountered” by the Border Patrol.

The recent capture of the two Iranian nationals with links to terrorism set off alarm bells within U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Both individual's names were on the Terrorist Screening Database. This underscores the significance of the security threat they potentially pose.

These arrests come amidst growing concerns about border security and the effectiveness of measures in place to prevent such incursions.

The Department of Homeland Security has been actively monitoring the situation and previously warned about an increasing number of individuals on the U.S. terrorist watchlist encountered at the border.

Hamas attacks heighten threats

The report further indicated that the Department of Homeland Security anticipates that the threat of violence from individuals radicalized in the United States will remain high, with the potential for lone offenders or small group attacks that occur with minimal warning.
