Tech conglomerate Uber continues to revolutionize the way people think about transportation. The company first started with rideshare before branching out into food delivery with Uber Eats, package transfers, freight services, and more.

All things considered, it's safe to say Uber won't be going away anytime soon. In fact, the company is becoming increasingly integrated into society.

Back in August, Uber announced its partnership with self-driving company Cruise. For years, it's been working to get automated vehicles to riders, presenting this alternative as a safer, more effective mode of transportation.

This time, Uber's expansion continues with Avride, a company that specializes in autonomous cars. At the heart of this new partnership is one goal: expediting food deliveries to Uber Eats customers.

It's still in the early stages

In the weeks ahead, Austin, Texas will operate as the testing grounds for Avride robots delivering food to people who've ordered from Uber Eats. Before 2025 (and assuming everything goes well in Austin), Avride robots will then make their way to Jersey City and Dallas.

In a public statement, Uber expressed optimism about this new partnership to streamline food deliveries. According to the rideshare company, the union with Avride is empowering "mutually enhancing technologies." Uber then revealed the aforementioned robots are active not just here in the States, but also in South Korea.

Avride CEO Dmitry Polishchuk also shared similar remarks. According to Polishchuk, the company will put hundreds of its robots into action via Uber Eats in 2025. Avride alsohas plans to proceed with a robotaxi service which they believe will streamline transportation and reduce car ownership expenses.

What does this mean for delivery drivers?

Despite the massive potential that automation presents, its various developments are not without controversy. As Uber pairs with Avride and Cruise, some people have questioned where this will leave delivery drivers who rely on dropping off food orders to feed their families.

On the other hand, supporters of artificial intelligence view robotaxi services, self-driving cars, and delivery robots through a more positive lens. Many argue these apparatuses will create more jobs and new opportunities for workers. Others believe the potential loss of employment will pale in comparison to societal gains.
